[help] Mail icon?

I am a new OSX user, and I have figured out that Mail.app doesnt check your mail unless its open, which means the dock icon doesnt update either. That really bothers me. Is there a way for the dock icon to check the email and update periodically?

I managed to create an automator workflow that checks the mail, then closes Mail, but I dont know how to run it periodically.

Thanks

Why not just keep Mail open? It doesn't take much resources... right now on my iMac it's idling and taking only ...

90 megs of RAM. Wow. Okay, well, I have RAM to spare, so...

Sorry. I don't know of any other solution. If you're using GMail, you could download the GMail Notifier.

But if you want to do it my way, just drag Mail into the Login Items in Accounts in System Preferences, and it'll open automatically at launch, and will check your mail every few minutes (I believe the default is five minutes. You can change it in the General pane in Mail Preferences).

I had trouble with this same thing, as I was a dock purist and wanted nothing I didn't need on my dock. Now I just leave it open all the time.
