Hey! Can somebody please recommend for me some good/safe bit torrent programs for a first time user, I want access to mainly movies and music. Also is there much risk in using a bittorrent as I've heard they're un-safe when compared to p2p file sharing programs.

www.utorrent.com is the Bittorrent client of choice for many people including me, it is updated frequently , is really small, fast and needs very little resources , typically <8mb RAM. It also includes a search box for the most popular torrent sites.
Bittorrent is as safe as any other method of downloading, however if you are really paranoid i recommend PeerGuardian2 http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/ it is a firewall which is for p2p
If you looking for a program similar to P2P, try Cabos http://cabos.sourceforge.jp/ it is useful for locating small single files

I have been using the bittorrent client called Azureous and it is pretty good. Depending on your internet speed and configuration of the client, it get really fast, I am talking about 40, 80, 100, which is not usual on P2P networks. I usually got like 20-30 on P2P, but since the bittorrent get so much faster, I dont use P2P anymore. For the configuration part, it is the hardest one, but there is a very detailed step-by-step guide on the official program website that guides you on how to solve the common NAT problem by setting an static IP address and port-fowarding settings for your PC. Once you get that setup, you will start getting green faces and that means max speed.
Here is the client, and here is the tutorial you will need to follow. Pay special attention and make sure you do the steps for setting static IP and port fowarding.

I use utorrent and after trying most of the other Bittorrent programs out there I think it out classes all the others by a long shot. It is small and uses very little memory. The development cycle is also quite fast- with new versions being released almost weekly. I also feel like utorrent is quickly growing into one of the most popular clients out there and there seems to be a lot of momentum behind it- for example many of the trackers have started 'advertising' people use utorrent. But what I like most about it is that it seems to have the best blanace between features and usability. It does what it is built for really well and it doesnt do things that it doesnt need to do. If something is better implemented by a third party program then the developers will not waste time duplicating functionality.
Azureus has a great deal of granularity of control and is very easy to extend using plugins. It is also OSS and cross-platform so many people this quite appealing. Many of the features that come as standard in clients now were first used by Azureus- for example dht was implemented in azureus before the Mainline client. (As an aside, the Azureus implementation of dht is still incompatible with that implemented by Mainline/utorrent/bitcomet, hopefully this will change in the future) I find Azureus very resource hungry- mainly due to the Java overhead. And it is also IMHO quite ugly. Also the UI needs a bit of work- some things just don't seem intuitive to me.
I have found Bitcomet to be very fast- but many people believe that this is only because bitcomet 'cheats'. I'm not exactly sure how it does this (maybe hammering the announce url) but it has been banned from many private trackers due to these problems. I would stay away from this client if you plan to use private trackers. However there is one feature that this client has that makes it quite useful- it is able to encrypt the headers of BT packets to bypass ISPs who shape BT traffic. So if you are in this situration bitcomet may be your only option.
Once you get your bittorent program setup I would recommend that you download a torrent of a popular file that should max out your connection (for example the openoffice.org torrents). If you are not saturating your downstream with these torrents then there is most likely something wrong with your setup- eg NAT problems or a over saturated upstream.

uTorrent is the best Bittorrent program I've used - and I've used a few. Its light and does the job with minimal fuss.

Hmmm, can anyone else see the word 'pirate'? ...or am i missing something 
I'm sure he wants access to legititimate media because of course none of us would ever consider breaking the law by downloading pirated media.

The BitComet client is simple to use and works. I haven't tried using uTorrent but I might check it out.
I started out with ABC, used it for about a year. Nice and simple design.
Then tried Azureus (b/c a political site I go to had a dht torrent that wouldn't work with ABC) which I immediated dumped because it is such a resource hog. Only used it off and on for a week though.
Tried utorrent when I saw foood released a nice uTorrent toolbar/icon just to try it out and it's so lightweight it won me over immediatly. Nice minimal layout and then f5 gives you detailed info when you need it. The only thing I really miss from ABC is coloured text for various states.
I really wish websites would use it more... it really helps out small sites with heavy vid. content (made using crooksandliars.com more enjoyable although he's not using torrents enough lately).

Anyway I tried Azureous and spent about 2 hours trying to configure it all with my computer but I just couldn't do it, my virus programs went nuts and I just wasn't getting anywhere with it. I really tried with it because I've heard it is one of the best bittorrents out there. Next I tried uTorrent next and again it was a real struggle to sort out portfowarding with multiple routers and modems but I finally figured it all out. By using a guide written by 1c3d0g I have it all set up without much fuss and the download speeds I've been getting in comparison to p2p programs i've used have been outstanding.

I use Azureus- Its simple for **** users and has advanced features for those who look...
as far as I know its free of spyware and it has a cool icon.
But its great- you have to be weary about where you download torrents from rather than just the program itself...Torrent sites are often as bad as crack/warez websites with reguards to viruses and spyware- reguardless of whether or not u are downloading anything.
I found a great Torrent site, which searches 55 different torrent sites http://torrent-finder.com/ ...just be weary about what sites you go to as Torrent FInder links to other sites- they may be spyware havens...
PS- Torrents are better than normal P2P when it comes to infected stuff, plus its faster- you can download whole albums rather than just picking individual songs.
Why anyone would use anything but uTorrent is beyond me. I used to use Azureus, but uTorrent is Azureus, but much smaller and compact, needs no installation, runs faster, etc.

what on every file you download - I doubt it. BT is dependent on Seeds/Peers and if they drop out you get no activity. Usenet isn't reliant on any user being connected and you can also check the complete file is there before downloading... I've lost count of the amount of BT files I've deleted because they won't go past 99.7%!

you use a program that can combine .par files - or a program that connects to usenet. The only down side is you have to pay a monthly subscription - depending on your bandwidth needs... but its not too bad.

usenet contains binaries (programs, video, music, whatever) and text (what you read)
you need a program to read/download binaries like eg. newsleecher, grabit (free), newsbin pro, etc.
stuff uploaded as binaries in newsgroup are uploaded in small files (usually RARs) that can be re-assemble into the original large file because if you upload a big chunky file then it would run into chances of being incomplete on newsgroup and useless.
sometimes some files are incomplete after uploading so you need a recovery set to recover the missing/incomplete files using QuickPAR.
