Firefox to safari tutorial (revamped)

ok, the firefox to safari stickied post is super outdated.

ive gotten a lot of comments about my emulation of safari.

so i thought id make a tutorial.

first off, this is for firefox 1.0.7 or 1.0.4. it wont work with other versions (sorry. if you really want this, you can download 1.0.7 at [here]

note: this tutorial is mainly aimed toward those with windowblinds.

ok. first things first.

1. download the .rar and extract it to a folder.

open up firefox and go to tools>themes. install "Safari Firefox Theme.jar" by dragging the file to the themes window.

2. now go to tools>extensions. drag "rss extension" "titlebar tweak" "tabbrowser" "stop_reload combination" "compact menu" "fusion" and "add bookmark" to the extensions window. exit firefox.

3. do the run command (start menu>run, or windows key+r) and type in "%appdata%mozillafirefoxprofiles" (without the quotation marks) it will open a folder with another folder inside it, one with obscure numbers and letters. open this and navigate the "chrome" folder inside this.

drag "userChrome.css" and "userContent.css" to the window. if you already have such files, (leave "userchrome Example" and usercontent example - those dont matter) then open up the files i have included and copy/paste the contents into yours, and save it.

4. open up your firefox folder (by default, c:program filesmozilla firefox) and naviagate to the chrome folder. when youre there, drag and drop "browser.jar" and "help.jar" to the chrome folder window. it will ask you to replace the files - say ok.

5. go to your windowblinds configuration window. click "install from disk" and find "Windowblinds Safari.wba" and open it.

go to "per application" and select "add application settings" (if you havent already specified a firefox theme)

browse and find firefox.exe (usually c:program filesmozilla firefoxfirefox.exe) and hit ok. click "select skin" and find "Tiger Safari by Toyo Snow" and click ok, then ok again. click "apply changes" and exit wbconfig.exe

6. open firefox and go to tools>extensions.

a. right click titlebar Tweaks and select options. under layout, check "webpage title". click OK

b. right click Tabbrowser Extensions. in "Appearance>Tab" check "Show in any tab always" in the closebox area. in "Misc", check "Use another appearance for Firefox on Mac OS X"

7. Right click any place on the firefox toolbar and select "Customize"

Drag "Compact Menu" (the icon that looks like lines of text) to the bar with the address bar. the "File, Edit, etc" menu will disappear. Now, from the main naviagation bar, drag the following to the top bar where the file menu used to be in this order (from left to right):

Back/forward buttons

Stop/refresh

Add Bookmark

Compact menu

Address Bar and Search bar

now click OK on the customize window. right click on the toolbar and uncheck "Navigation Toolbar"

8. Rightclick>customize again. make sure on the lower bar, your bookmark toolbar items are showing. then, drag the bookmark icon from the window to the bookmark toolbar, before the bookmark text.

That should be about it.

NOTE I DID NOT MAKE ANY OF THESE SKINS/EXTENSIONS, IF YOU WANT TO COMPLIMENT THE WORK, I HAVE NO PROBLEM, JUST TALK TO THEM AND NOT ME

if any of the developers dont approve of their skin/extension being in this package/tutorial, please tell me and ill make sure it is removed.

Cheers, and kudos to the makers of these components

I know it says for FireFox 1.07 only but I for one use FF 1.5 so....will it work all the same?

Apologies if it's just for 1.07- users.

dum dee dum

#346780

@shmeng - yeah, i thought i made it pretty clear that it wouldnt work for 1.5, but just in case i put a warning by the download

Please post any and all feedback/questions.

personally, if i had 1.5, i would downgrade just for this. it looks amazing.

#346784

This is... really, truly not worth the effort. First, there is no legitimate reason to use FF 1.0.x anymore. Most if not all relevant extensions are updated for 1.5 (except for Fusion, but if you're that picky, why not just buy a Mac and get it over with?). 1.5 also fixes security holes that are present in 1.0.x.

The best way to emulate Safari these days is just to download Bazonbloch's Safire theme, plus the relevant extensions (Tab Mix Plus, Safari-modded Add Bookmark Here, Compact Menu, the Sage mod on these forums, etc.) There's no reason to keep using any other theme, unless they update and include features Safire doesn't have. As of now, that's looking very unlikely.

Though you do get credit for including Toyo-Snow's Windowblinds theme, though it appears to be version 1.5.1 of that theme: he updated it to 1.5.2 on December 26.

#346791

Yeah, downgrading is a terrible idea... You lose performance AND all the security fixes in 1.5

#346792

hmm.

1.0.7 works fine for me.

it doesnt seem any different to me than 1.5

edit: post #69

#346798

1.0.7 works fine, yes. But the point is, there are numerous bugfixes and security fixes in 1.5 that aren't present in 1.0.7. Recommending a downgrade for the sake of Safari cloning isn't worth it, especially since you can get equal--if not better--results with 1.5 and the Safire theme.

#346800

+1 for FF 1.5 and safire

I just don't see any advantage to be gained by using FF 1.07 anymore.

#346812

While all your points are perhaps true, can we leave the discussion to this tutorial?

Create a new thread if you'd like to espouse on the advantages of FX 1.5 over FX 1.07, (just put it in the right place and make sure we don't have one already :P). Discussion in this thread should be limited to discussion on this thread.

@Jack is cool--please don't double post or make up tags ;).

It's a fair point about threads, but new users should still be warned about the dangers of downgrading their firefox version. 1.5 contains safety features that earlier versions did not have, and people should be aware that, just as using IE6 is a bad mistake, so is using 1.07. A lot has happened in terms of hacking betweeen the two versions, and 1.07 doen't include protection for a number of critical exploits. Use 1.5 if you like firefox. Otherwise swtch to Opera. It's a lot uglier but a lot safer.

#346852

would be nice if ppl made themes for 1.5 or 1.07, dunno why still use 1.0 for safarifox.

before upgrading to 1.5, i was using 1.07 with some safari themes and they all work except using TBE (i hate that extension) the tabs dont look right and lost search functionality, the find bar didn't look right.

#346855

I most be blind or something because I don't see the differece between the two, can someone point them out? Oh, and can someone let me know how to erease the firefox logo and the name up on the tittle bar?

Oh, and can someone let me know how to erease the firefox logo and the name up on the tittle bar?

You can get rid of the name with the Titlebar Tweaks extension. For the Firefox logo, install Toyo-Snow's Safari version 1.5.2 for Windowblinds, then use the per-application settings to apply it just to Firefox.

#346859

What's wrong with safire, besides the google text not showing up in the search box?

Also, as I can see by those screenshots, the close button on the tabs is way too far left, and cut off in some circumstances. Might want to fix that. Plus, I'm not sure of the need for a 1:1 safari clone in the first place as that browser could use some tweaks and improvements itself (as far as the interface goes).

Just observations. Thanks for taking the time to write this up. :)

#346876

How did you get your bookmark toolbar text so smooth? Like it is kind of grey, mine is dark and black and it doesn't look like safari..

I would also like to know how to smooth the bookmarks toolbar text out a bit, and can anyone please direct me to an add bookmark button similar to the one in Safari that is compatible with FF 1.5? I have been looking for one forever but am having no luck. Thanks!

Second post from the top. If it doesn't install, use the Nightly Tester Tools extension's force compatibility feature to install it.

#355861

Thanks! The add bookmark button worked with nightly tester tools, now if only I could make the bookmarks toolbar more mac'ish, as Trent Pivot also said.

It has steps you did not mention in yours.

#358700

Hi,

I'm sorry for reopening an old thread, but I have some qustions about Safari to Fox 1.0.7. At first thanks for the tutorial Jack, it works almost perfectly.

First issue I found was with using right mouse button. Normally when i click right mouse buton in browser window, small menu appear (see pic), but with edited "browser.jar" very large window reveal after pressing right button (view pic), with items I will practically never use, and most people too. Is there any options how I should have SafariFox with common menu?

Second prolem was with Tabbrowser Extensions, which completely doesn't work and newer version work just for a while. Is there any substitute for Tabbrowser Extensions?

Thanks for replies.

M.
