Do You Know Dos

DOS was the first OS I became antangled with! About 4 years ago i became in love with old computer and DOS! Why I thought that Windows 98 was a shell of DOS! So I tried to repartition and and install DOS and Windows 98, and i almost f***ed my HD! Cuz noone at even HP knew how to fix it till me and a DOS expert finally got it to realize the full 10 GB and FAT-32 potential insead of only 3 GB..

Anyway! Do you know DOS, I mean really! can you load devices in config.sys and know endless swithes and options AND Syntax?

Can you install programs with Batch Files (w/ out reg adjustments of course)?

I made a bootdisk, i modified the files to load CD-rom drivers and to include external executables in default commands.

that's about it.

beyond that, I basically work in the qbasic and turboC environment.

And of course, games.

I started to use DOS in 1992. That was DOS 3.3, later upgraded to 5.0.

Original DOS (until 6.22) does NOT support FAT32. I think the DOS you mentioned in your post is bundled with Win98 which is DOS7.0.

In 1994, I tried Windows 3.0 and 3.1, then I was against using Windows because there was no software for it.

Later in 1995, I tried Windows95 beta on 386DX40, 4MB RAM. I installed it from 20+ floppy disks. It took me around 4 hours. However, I deleted it right after I entered it. It was crap! I saw only 4 icons on the desktop and I really did not what to do.

DOS was so great. You can do a lot of things in it. I once translated command.com into Chinese using PCTOOLS. That was fun.

There were many demos/intros in DOS that were so amazing. Some of them could display smooth color bars (with 256+ colors) in TEXT MODE!!!

Tweaking config.sys and autoexec.bat was not as hard as installing a driver in Windows95/98. And the bootup speed is really fast (2 or 3 seconds compared to 10+ seconds of Windows.)

There was no partition magic for DOS in old days. But you can backup your partition using debug.exe by inputting some assemble code and instructions. I never partitioned my harddisk unless it was destroyed by virus.

But DOS doesn't have internet function built-in. It also doesn't have multi-task processing. Most importantly, there are no new software for it now. This prevents it from being popular these days.

What's more, in original DOS, you can use "help.exe" to check the syntax for all commands. You can also use "command_name/?" to get help messages (for example "dir/?' or "if/?")

Batch commands in DOS are said to be too simple compared with Linux/Unix shell. However you can still do a lot of things with them. Check out "for/?' and "if/?".

Despite of comp class i took when i was 9, i started to really get into computer in 1998.

Lets see, you started using dos in 1992... and i was 10...

i thought it was boring to look at all those commands, and teachers were so excited, "you could display the data by using 'type' command!!!"

i was like so what.

I remember my firstday in class. Teacher said, "type @#$# then hit spacebar, then type #@#$@#, then spacebar , then enter"

I didn't know what SPACEBAR is, i just ignored it and got error msgs and stared at the teacher.

Hell yeah....I've used DOS on my old Pentium 133....(yeah it still works )...Been using it since DOS 3.3 all the way up to 6.22....and it ownz Windows anyday.... :rant:

I used to do DOS and CP/M back in the days of APPLE II. Then I did DOS in the Commodore 64. Breezed through PCDOS and MSDOS (anyone remember the 8088 IBM PC, 8086 PC XT, 80286, PC AT). Still have to boot MSDOS 7 once in a while to manipulate files which I couldn't do in Windows.

DOS is powerful!!! DOS Rulezzz. I've been learning it since 1994 when I was Kinder I. I played with it and a wiz kid teach me how to use it correctly. So, I already know all the commands (iThink). Thanks for that wiz kid.

DOS is obsolete. Its boring. Not Internet Ready. Thats all I can say about DOS.

btw, whats the difference between PC-DOS and MS-DOS? Kinda confused? Even though that is already answered by my classmates, but still, whats the difference?

Wrong. QDOS, as it was known then, was created in 1980 by Tim Patterson of SCP (Seattle Computer Products) before he sold the rights to Microsoft (who wanted to sell it to a secret customer) and earned $25,000 for it.

Microsoft improved on it and sold it as PC DOS to their secret customer aka IBM.

IBM discovered several bugs while running it through so many tests that they had to re-write a lot of portions of PC-DOS and finally came out with PC-DOS version 2.0

If it weren't for DOS, there would be no way of letting the computer load stuff from the drives. DOS was the best OS at its time and was the only way to load Windows until 98.

Windows was just a GUI over DOS so please don't belittle DOS because you never knew it by heart.

Oh and Bill Gates became rich mainly because of his marketing strategies.

PC-DOS was copyright of IBM and Microsoft and was supposedly designed to work only on real IBM PC computers. Microsoft created MS-DOS in order to sell to a bigger market of clone makers. So both programs were the essentially the same and yet had enough small differences in terms of capabilities, capacities and bugs.

Those slight differences guaranteed that some programs will work only if you were running PC-DOS and some will only work on MS-DOS machines. Still, there were more programs that didn't need any of the DOS hooks so the OS loader didn't matter.

DOS is the worst command line OS, EVER!

Its just a (very bad) rip off of UNIX. If you want to learn something useful, grab a *nix and use its CLI. Its much more intuitive, and 1000x more powerful.

My first was a Tandy 500 :6 , it didn't even have DOS, or a HDD, everything was run off of the (big) floppies. I did my school work on that for ages. I was soo poor. <_<

My first DOS computer was a 386SX, I upgraded it to dos 6.22 from dos 5, and I was amazed. It was sooo powerful (LOL). Then when I installed Win 3.11, CRAP!
