Next mac discussion

hey..new to Aqua-Soft but looks like a great site, i'm into the whole emulating thing lol.

I've had my Powerbook (ehh gigabit ethernet, the 15" version) and i've heard numerous rumors regarding problems with hinges on the titanium versions...

well I don't consider them rumors any longer...the right hinge on mine is breaking...but anyhow, mine was bought used (the previous owner used it for about 1 year) for very cheap, blah blah blah, long story short - i'm planning to upgrade.

I have a few questions about the mac mini and G5...

The G5 - is the system layout / file system worth the fact that you're paying $1000 for only a 1.9GHz processor? I could very well build the same performing Windows PC for way less than even a 17" imac, but I hate the Windows file system and UI so yeah...but the hard drive, ram, all that is decent I think.

the mini - from anyone who has used it, how well does it perform? does it give a lot of problems? I'm interested in a mini because the work I do sometimes involves me going places (not far, just long distances by car i mean) and it would be simple for me to pack a mini + my flat panel monitor in my trunk. They're a good price, but all I want to know is, from someone who's used one, how good they hold up and perform overall. i've never used one, ever.

both your questions can of course be answered with two words... "it depends"

it depends on what kind of work you'll be doing, the applications, the necessary "performance" you expect, etc

how badly do you need a new computer?

if it is not entirely urgent that you purchase a new computer, i'd suggest waiting.

MacWorld SF 2006 is coming in just over two weeks, and there may be new hardware announced.

GHz has become such an arbitary unit now, that it's really no use comparing how much GHz you get for your cash in a Mac and in a PC. To know the difference, you have to look at how the actual applications you are going to be using perform on each platfrom, and not just the figures. Especially seeing as the processor speed is only one of many parts that can alter the performance.

And like the others have said, how badly do you need it, otherwise it might just be worth waiting for a little while....
