The future; Apple/Intel/Sony vs Microsoft/Toshiba/AMD/ATI

Heres some thoughts for the day/week/month

There has been countless rumours about OSX (tiger) or Linux tipped to be the OS on the PS3...google it, you'll find millions

I think alliances could divide the computing game into two clear sections

Apple/Intel/Sony vs Microsoft/Toshiba/AMD/ATI

let me throw some things into the air;

Frontrow vs Media Center

PS3 vs Xbox

Sony vs Microsoft

Sony vs apple?

Apple Vs Microsoft

Toshiba Vs Sony

Power Pc Vs Intel

Intel VS AMD

While I hate Microsoft, I do love Xbox over PS2 and have become obsessed with games such as Halo etc...But if the PS3 does decide to side with apple, think about the big picture;

Apple for work, Sony for play .....vs Microsoft's buggy OS' and 3rd party hardware... Its time that Apple entered in some way into the gaming/entertainment world a little more than just iPod, ad what better way than to side with the most popular home entertainment system Playstation?

As for Sony...well that raises complications- thier current computer systems use intel hardware but run windows.

Apple currently uses "toshiba" hard drives in its iPod range, and so does the xbox 360...but what if Sony began to supply HD's for iPods?

Sure, Sony does make its own Mp3 HDD players (walkmans), but they are no where near as good or as successful as the iPod, Sony would be far better just supplying the HDD for the iPod- they would make more money that way....and apple would have no more competition from Sony....a mutual agreement, working together against xbox and toshiba- rather than siding with part of the enemy.

Apple could return the favour by offering a stripped down OSX for the PS3 with frontrow. ...Frontrow on iMacs is a little impracticle at the moment running on a desktop computer- but imagine it on the PS3, frontrow would be far more practicle on a tv screen opposed to a desktop computer.

I dont believe a full version of OSX would be practicle on the PS3, but if it were able to integrate with apple desktops, and have frontrow media capabilities- think of the potential....plus ps3 was made with USB ports and a HD for these reasons- greater media capabilities...

but to throw a spanner in the works- I think its funny that PS3 is moving to Power Pc while apple is doing the opposite moving to intel...

As for most PC fanboys, they have begun moving to AMD hardware opposed to intel...for gaming...

Furthermore, Microsoft has dumped Intel (originally used in the xbox) for the Xbox 360, siding with ATI hardware instead...notice the trends yet?...

furthermore Flash memory- Probably one of the biggest motivators with the apple switch to intel... "Instant on" macs which use flash memory opposed to hard drives- far faster than hard drive based computers, and something which rivals are yet to delve into- intel and apple have been the fastest, with rumours of "intstant on" macs in 2006...it could revolutionise the way in which OSes work and are set out-

eg- imagine turning off your mac with some apps running and then 46hrs later, switch it on and all your apps are where you left them despite the computer being turned off...

Conclusion

THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO SEE IN THE FUTURE

while it will never be as clear cut as this, this would be the ideal future of computing and could well lead to the demise of microsoft and 3rd party hardware brands;

On one side___________________________________On the other;

OSX Tiger (or OS11)_____________vs______________Windows Vista

PS3____________________________vs______________Xbox 360

Ipod(with sony HD)_______________vs_____________Creative/iRiver/toshiba players

FrontRow_______________________vs______________Media Center

Intel/Power PC___________________vs______________AMD/ATI

Sony ___________________________vs______________Toshiba

There will of course be others in the equation- but these are the main contenders…

Who do you support now?

What do you think?

#342870

Sony is helping Apple with work on the Intel PowerBook (not the first time Sony has helped them).

#342872

well there you go...good observation...this division is seeming more credible by the second...

#342873

OSX Tiger (or OS11)_____________vs______________Windows Vista
It's Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard vs. Windows Vista

#342874

Interesting look on everything, competive companies can only benefit the end-user

If Vista development continues as for now, Leopard will be no match for it.

IMHO: Vista is just pathetic attempt to make a sharp-looking OS. They should think not how to realise sidebar and desktop search, but how to find all leaks and holes in their code.

I'm sure Apple has many holes and leaks in their code but Apple is definetely not as widely used as Windows. Saying that if I were a hacker with the intentions of the most damage possible would I begin researching for flaws for a less used and prettier system or a uglier more widely used system...I'd go for the more widely used system. I think Microsoft has every right to emulate some of the Apple features because they are well, innovative and you can't tell me Apple hasn't taken a coule of things from Microsoft.

#342886

umm stupidest thing ive ever heard. Its FULL of holes.

I agree... Vista= Windows XP with sugar coating.

did I misunderstand you?!?...*gasp*...*choke*.....if you're talking about Mac OSX having holes, then obviously you have never used both platforms... Windows releases its OS, then has to release countless "bandaid fixes" or security updates, most of which slow down the system or dont properly cover the "holes" in its dodgy OS...

Apple tests thier OS extensively, and built OSX from the ground up with security in mind, so that they have to worry less about fixing those holes...

Thanx for clarifying you're right...

Time to quote John Lennon;

"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one, I hope some day you will join us, and the world will live as one"

...Yeah ohh well, I might be dreaming, M$ is owned by the world's richest man- but I see a hard battle if things do swing my desired way (which they rarely do)...

#342918

Here's my two cents: I predict the alliance between old rivals. Microsoft and Apple shacking up to beat a common foe: Google!

Why the heck else would Apple jump over to the Intel bandwagon? It's easier to work with an old rival if your hardware platforms are similar (if not identical).

#342932

?....Google....and since when have Microsoft and Apple been an alliance???

Dont get me wrong- I believe Google rules the internet (as well as firefox) , and it has the ability to outstandingly link platforms, and add so much extra functionality (weather, news, google earth, google define...).....but its always going to be software only based, and usually centered around the net in some way- with some exceptions-eg- desktop search.....

And i dont believe in Google OS.

"Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful"

http://www.google.com/intl/en/corporate/

-In other words they intend to bring together information on the net..."universally accessible"...

_ I believe Apple jumped onto the "bandwagon" in order to get in built "Flash Memory" on thier motherboards opposed to internal HD's as the main storage....

plus I feel that intel hardware is probably better geared in order to compete against M$ so that more programs etc can be ported faster...but apple will always put its little magic to every program ported.

Somebody needs to lay off crack :rolleyes:

#342958

You're wrong! Ingvar Kamprad the the IKEA founder. ;)

Apple has done a HUGE thing for microsoft... gave bill gates the idea of a "windowed" operating system. Mac OS WAS the first one made.... Bill Gates is just a damn thieve. who is taking atvantage of the stupidity of people to buy windows. and because of his massive success early... he began expanding. thats why Mac OS isant more popular then Windows. they stay with their own hardware rather then windows which controls the OS market.

#343047

Fair enough. I should never post when I should be asleep. :D

Well last i heard was because they didnt want to do business with IBM anymore, they failed to reach a certain level of performance so Apple choose to go with Intel instead. Correct me if im wrong.

#343172

i thought it was ati v.s. nvidia???

powerpc is from ibm right? so why would m$ be against what they use?!

m$ stole gui from apple which stole it from xerox.

people will continue to use windows even though it sucks. vista is a uglified and mutilated tiger. m$ continues to copy apple [connected back/foward buttons? "fast search" = spotlight, "stacks"=smart folders, ETC>]

actually MS stole the gui from a xerox.

Windows doesnt suck. For the average desktop user its more than perfect. I dont think MS copied apple at all. Apple hasnt shipped their OS with a transparent theme have they? Not to my knowledge.

?....I have no idea what your on about- perhaps I was genralising a bit too much, but I think all of the info I said was fairly acurate...no I dont smoke crack UNBE....thanks for humouring me.

so there :P

Apple hasnt shipped their OS with a transparent theme have they? Not to my knowledge.

Yes they did...I think they were one of the first to do it, in the early versions of OSX (10.1/10.2??? in the titlebar at top of windows), they later cut out transparency, because it made window navigation confusing (confusing like in Vista)...

I think they might still use transparency in some things such as in toolbars in photoshop- correct me if I'm wrong Tiger Users....

Yeah, but John Lennon is dead.

SO?...the song lives on, even if the guy who wrote its dead. PWND.
