Samurize Widgets

Nothing new since October 10th.

#341235

Thanks for the great update :)

#341237

you forgot dashboard widgets =/

don't forget us :P

#341252

Please see the original thread on this topic. It was stated that I would only be including Dashboard widgets if I was contacted with information on widgets to add. I'm not a mac user.

I enjoy seeing an overview like this. Thanks, andrew. :)

but it's a bit unhandy to say there's been no new Samurize "widgets" (which are actually called configs) since Oct 10th. All you need to do is check out Samurize.com's download section, and you can see all the latest things. or even go to http://browse.deviantart.com/skins/sysmonitor/samurize/.

If you're not willing to do this, then it would be better to not include Samurize in this weekly report.

ps - I had a quick look, and can't even find the Samurize section at www.wincustomize.com. It's hidden pretty well, so it's no wonder you haven't found anything there.

#342135

I only visit the main site/archive for each app. As I stated in the original discussion about this (and apparently have to keep stating over and over) I will only include widgets posted to other sites if the information about them is sent to me. I'm not going to go running around the web hunting down each and every widget posted to each and every site.

Up until just a few days ago it seems, widgets for samurize were called exactly that according to their download archive. It seems that their downloads archive was updated recently and the terminology was changed to 'scripts & plugins'. Widgets DO NOT equal configs and I will not include entire configs - again, go to the original discussion on the matter - and as a note, It's not up for rehashing.

Additionally, the new Samurize download archive is doing an extremely poor job of sorting by date. Their main archive reports several new 'Scripts & Plugins' (new as of 12/20) but going directly to and clicking on the section for 'Scripts and Plugins' (new only as of 11/5). It's definately not my shortcomming that their archive isnt performing as it should, and it's very likely that due to that fact you will see some 'Scripts and Plugins' missing from the report.

PLEASE STOP POSTING ON WHAT YOU FEEL IS MISSING. IF YOU FEEL THAT SOMETHING IS MISSING, TAKE INITIATIVE AND SEND ME INFORMATION EVERY WEEK THAT I CAN INCLUDE IN THE REPORT

Damn! that dalek widget might just make me install the engine formerly known as konfabulator.

#342282

I only posted because I felt you were doing Samurize a disservice by saying that nobody's created anything new in the past two months. when, in fact, there have been new uploads at samurize.com (no need to run around the net looking.. :P). The former "widget" area at samurize.com was a subcategory under Samurize Configs, and all it contained was a handful of configs that may have been slightly special in some way. That section has been removed, because in reality, there was nothing really special about those configs to warrent their own section, and to be called "widgets".

I suppose the closest translation to a "widget" is a Samurize Package File. A SAM file is a zip file, which contains a config (or many configs), along with the necessary files that go with them, such as any script/plugins/images/fonts they may use. This is similar to .widget files, except that SAM files cannot be ran directly. they must be extracted first, and the config is then loaded with the Samurize client, which there are different types: desktop, taskbar, clock, screensaver. Mose people use the desktop version.

The Script & Plugin section has many subsections, and the root section does not show all the files. Perhaps it's not the best way to do things, but that's the way it is. You shouldn't need to browse that section to find the latest files anyways. The main downloads page lists every file that's been uploaded. plus, a script or a plugin by itself is not that useful, unless it's combined with a config. Most Samurize users recognize a config as being the collection of files that makes it what it is. A config may make use of a script/plugin in some way, but that doesn't mean it gets a different label, such as widget, or gadget.

Anyway, you're doing a fine job, but if you don't want to see a config as a widget, then it would probably be better to not include Samurize in your list. It'd be a shame, but it's better than seeing "nothing new" week after week.

I popped into the samurize irc channel today to let them know about the sorting problems in their download archives. It's up to them to fix it, not to me to fish through the erroneous results.

If you feel that samurize is being dealt a disservice then I'll say again; take some initiative and send me the correct info to make sure I'm including what you would like to see.
