Aqua-Soft ForumsIn XP is there any benefit to having the page file on a seperate partition/drive? Where should it be if its on a seperate partiton on the same drive? Before or after the OS? Any other tips will be cool. 
Page File Tips
Yes, having it on a seperate partition is ideal.
Why:
You cant defrag the Page File, so it clutters up whatever partition its on because of constant writing.
You cant move it, so if you need to resize the partition, and the pagefiles at the end, your stuck (possibly).
Where to put it:
If you have a seperate drive, thats best, but:
Make it the first partition on the drive, b/c the first partition is written and read the fastest, and since the page file is always being written/read, it makes the whole OS run faster.
For me, my computer runs like 10% faster with the pagefile on the first partition.
Another tip: make the page file size constant, like 700-700MB, because that way the file isnt being written to when its not needed, so that will make things a little faster too.
If you're going to move the page file then make sure that the drive it's moved to is actually a new physical drive and not a partition of an existing drive for example let's say you have two forty gig hard drives
the first one you use to hold C: drive and D: drives you do this by partitioning the system into 20gigs and 20 gigs (I know it technically won't be 20 and 20 but too lazy to type all the numbers out.)
Anway it's a BAD idea to put it on D: and it's best if you put it on E drive which is what you''re going to be naming the 2nd drive. So simply put it's GOOD to put the page file on different hdd's but bad to put it on a different partition of the same drive as the OS drive.
Also here's an old old old old tip I remember if you have either 128 or 256 megs or less of ram (I can't remember which to be honest *snort* who doesn't have more than 128 or 256 MB anyways knowadays?) Then you should make the page file 2.5 times the size of the ram and if you have and if it's either more than 128 or 256 say like 512 then you should have 1.5 times the size of the ram as the pagefile.
