Hey im new here,
Just wondering is it anyway possible to make windows use png icons on your desktop instead of the ico files? The reason i ask is because if have some really like png icons i would like to use as shortcuts on my desktop. Thanks for you time!

Well, I'm not aware of a way to do what you're asking but I do have a solution.

I use this application pretty often.
It's freeware and allows ico, png, bmp conversions, as well as transparency masks and alpha channels.
Very useful in my opinion.
So what you can do is take your favorite .png's and convert them to .ico files for desktop use.
You can do it with litestep. I think the module that does it is called layercut... You can put 128x128 or any other size pngs on your desktop and you can configure normal, hover and pressed states (3 different pngs). If you go to shellfront.org you can find all the info that you need.

Beware that you can turn a png into ico but an icon is madeup of many "images" in many sizes, and with @icon sushi it will just make 1 icon image. Let me explain myself better.
An icon is made up of several images of different size, so the icon display correctly no matter the icon size your windows is configured. So an icon has the following sizes:
16x16
32x32
48x48
64x64
72x72
96x96
128x128
If you have a 128x128 png converted to ico using @icon sushi you will have an icon with only one image size 128x128 this means that it will display jagged on a lower icon resolution like 48x48.
So what do you need to make in order to display correctly using @icon sushi? Have the image resized in all the sizes mentioned and with @icon sushi join them all into an icon with all the corret sizes. this process is kinda long you can minimize it, but if you dont want sush long process try Axialis Icon Workshop, it allows to make this automatically, however it is a shareware.
@icon sushi is great but if you are new I would recommend iconworkshop (www.axialis.com). If you need further help let me know and I can explain how.
I'm not into litestep but if you are new I would recommend keep it simple and dont get into that, try the normal windows method.

I think it can be done with samurize, I don't know how because I don't use it, but try searching the board 'samurize' or similar.
There is a application called Axilis Icon Workshop (spelling unsure) that will convert PNG to ico and will do a perfect job as it will adjust the size so that the icons look nice. (ie, the icons have sizes ranging from 16 x 16 to 128 x 128)
It is a 30 day demo, but does it's job nicely.
I have Axialis Icon Workshop, and i think that is the best..
But anyway, anyone else know a program that will make it able to use pngs or jpgs as icons?

i don't know about a specific program that does that but u can get a plugin for photoshop that lets u save into .ico
Iam just using Dual Yz dock one one the side where I changed the name of the background folder that way it wont show a dock then I can use all the pngs I want or docklets looks great
