Just got Mandrake 9

I just finifhed burning this images, I got the 3 discs. I tired to emulate it oin virtual pc, but it kinda froze, I will try again. So I can access Linux from boot, right? With that menu that shows the OS's avaible to boot, well how do I add Mandrake there, is there a program to do that? I will try to emualte it in the meantime, help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I think my question was not clear, but I wanted something, that when my computer boots up, tell me which OS I would like to run XP or Linux. But I've got a problem when it was almost installed, it doesnt detects my video card, I will try again, but is there a generic driver avaible on the installation? Because when the OS is booting up, it gets out, and ask me my user and password, but it doesnt loads a theme or gui or that thing, which was supposed to be gnome or kde I guess. I will try again, but I am emulating the OS with Virtual PC, I willt try again to install it, and I will try to use the generic driver if I get to find it, if not, i might need to switch my video card, but I dislike that ides, since I just got Jedi Knight II, and I need my current video card to play it. If not I will try to use Redhat, I found an option of modem port in the emulator settings, fi all runs good, I might do the real installation in my PC. I just need help with the Video Driver, maybe the emulator is doing something wrong ot something like that, I'll try later and post the results. Thanks for the help.

:o sorry to hear that UR having a problem ,but I have never used virtual Pc or an emulator, I think u said U had a ATi 128 pro ,I have the Ati 2000 pro is the same exact chipset as far as I know, and it runs fine ,the other question U have with it asks u for ur username and password enter both and then type startx and it should take u to KDE GUI I think that when u installed U might have chosen not to startx on default so if get to the GUI first post here and then I will try to guide u to set the boot manager to startx everytime U log in so udont have to do it manually.

Well in the hardware compatibility list avaible at mandrake's websites it says ati rage 128 pro is not supported, this one and other one, doesnt work, but maybe is the emulator, I will try to find a generic drivers in the installation. When it boots, it shows what it is loading, but when it tries to get ther gui, it doesnt load, I think it is because of the video card. Ill see what can I do, I will install it again on te emulator.

#3126

I dont know what to tell U mmr_85 I just went to the ATI website and is the same chipset ,but I would not know is the regular 128 pro or the All In Wonder ,cause that might be the different chipset.

Okay... Virtual PC emulates hardware... meaning that virtual PC does nto emulate YOUR video card.... Although virtual uses your CPU speed.. it emulates everything else like a soundcard and a video card. Right now virtual PC emulates S3 trio 64 2meg video card with soundblaster 16bit... you may not have these hardware parts.. but Virtual PC Emulates them to make the os think thats the physical thing... so when you try to install linux on virtual PC.. you will not see your ATI radeon..or your real soundcard.. it will be another.. S3 is very old and Mdk9.0 is very knew.. im guessing mandrake quite support for S3 so if your trying to install Linux on virtual machine you may have a tiny bit of problesm.. it is able to get it to work as i have before (the GUI)... For the ATI radeon.. if you do insatll it on your computer physicaly... you will still see graphics as it will use a gerneric display.. and your resolution should be okay.. I got an ATI rage 128 on an old computer using generic drivers and its at 1280x1024 resolution. As for multiple Os chooser at boot. Mandrake will install LILO the mandrake boot loader.. when ever your computer starts it will load up this GUI screen with the options of booting Linux.. Xp.. or booting from Floppy.. so you dont have to edit anything your self.. it will do it all for you... any questions feel free to ask me

Here is what I get after it boots, I dont get to a gui or something, I will reinstall, and "accept" that i have that video card, because it detected a S3, and I change it to rage 128. After I try, I'll let you know the results. Thanks in advance.

when it was installing, I read something about Lilo, and a boot thing, I couldnt scroll down, but you guys say, that it will add the option to select where to boot from? I read a little saying if it detects a windows thing, it will add that lilo thing. So there might not be problems if I insert the CD and bootup my pc, and install? I will get that menu, so I can get back to XP if it fails to install?

#3153

:D Yes there should be no prob lilo will be the boot manager, even if the install fails lilo will stay and u would be able to go into Winblows no prob

excellent! So I will Linux formal install will be scheduled for saturday, I've got a pretty tight schedule with school right now. I'm emulating it right now, and runs kinda slow, I believe it is because it is emulated. My current system description is:

Pentium 3 866

256 Ram

With that is supposed to run good? because if it runs kinda slow right now, it might not be good, ill attached a screenshot of the emulation thing, I will try to add sound to this thing, how do I add hardware? so I can add the emulated sound blaster 16, and try to hear some music or something, I just installed some pretty basic stuff, but I will try to add more things.

#3168

when I tried to take the screenshot, the window is too big, for what I found I cannot change it using KDE, so how can I change it? another doubt, is there a way to have 128x128 icons? I found that the maximum is 64. Will my computer be able to run the OS smooth with the description above? and by the moment is all. Sorry for too much questions, but I'm ****ie in this :( but hopefully I will learn, I find this a cool experience.

U have a pretty good system to run linux I have a AMD 1800 xp with 384 ram runinng and a 333 mghz Celeron running Mandrake acting as a router for My machine and My bros Winxp, as far as Icons at 128x128 U might want to install a new set of icons preferably Crystal Iconset from Everaldo look good and it comes at 128x128 or the nice one from mixthepix at icosx.tuxfamily

Crystal Icons

mixThePix

to install them u have to go to the KDE Control Center on the is on the K equivalent to the win startmenu open up look and feel hit icons then on the bottom U will see a browse folder go to where u put Ur downloaded icons and then hit apply theme after U apply theme go into advanced and then u can customize the size hopes that helps. :D

IM's try gaim or Kopete im pretty sure they r installed normally on mandrake they should be under the networking section instant messenging they r pretty self explainable on how to setup but if u run into problems ask again.

PS: I LIKE KONQUEROR WEB BROWSER :D

#3182

thanks a lot, I will try to make that tomorrow, cause I'm gonna sleep now. Is there a theme more OS X style? or a website where I can download other icons sets for linux? I remember i once saw one, where a lot of icons were ported to linux, but I cant remember the page. I'm using Mozilla as the web browser, I might try Konqueror later, but how do I change resolution so I can show you how this is going?

thanks in advance

#3183

the MixThePix IcOSX r sweet looking I run that set for my root ,and crystal for user changing resulotion try Mandrake Control Center on the taskbar=kicker in KDE ,it will ask U for ur pass once the control center opens up hit hardware and then U will see resolution on the side. :D

#3186

Yes those icon pakcs are excellent.. im sure you will enjoy linux alot.. but it wil ltake a bit to get used to.. good luck mmr!

your graphics card should be fine, you can have a nice resolution with default generic drivers, although you will not be able to run any openGL applications or screensavers as then you would need to install special drivers for that

once again good luck!

#3308

I will try mandrake some weeks, if I decide to keep it, I will buy a modem that works, because the current one, does not work for default, and there is a way to make it to work with mandrake 8.2 but it involves some knowledge I dont currently have, so I will install it correctly, not emulated, but another thing, is that I have a "win sound card", it doesnt provides drivers, and it is not even on the list, are there generic drivers for them? how do I add hardware? so atleast I can emulate the sound card in the Virtual PC emulator.

#3332

With virtual pc you cant just decide what to emulate in it. Its a virtual computer emulating a soundblaster 16.. even though you dont have that.. thats what the operating system you install on virtual pc will think you have. You cannot change it in anyway.. everything is virtual and thats what the developers of virtual pc want to emulate.. a soundblaster for the virtual computer. When you install linux on this virtual PC.. you will not see any of your Physical hardware in the list. virtual pc emulates the hardware so you will not see your stuff detected.. something totaly different.. or maybe not at all depends on the distribution of linux. For your modem its a good idea to get a non windows modem, as there is little but some support for them. Iv never heard of a windows sound card... interesting, cant help you there. But using virtual PC isnt reliable as the speed is slow.. and not native. When you install it on your computer for real.. it will detect your physical hardware, unless it is totaly unsupported.

I know for a fact any Sound blaster IS supported by basicaly all linux's ATI and nvidia cards should be detected no problem as there is big support for these graphics cards.

#3362

yeah, what I meant was that I wanted to install the soundblaster 16, which is emulated, because I have no audio right now. I went to ask for a modem, but I dont have money to buy one, I need to go and ask for other cheaper ones, with a chipset that works, my audio card, has only drivers for windows, no other. It might turn to be a problem, but I'm going to search for a solution. It does run slow, on Friday I'm going to intall it, but I might not be able to get to the internet, cause I dont have a modem that will work, I can get through a shared connection of another computer, but will be a long process, but just for testing sometimes, will be more than ok, but I believe that my soundcard might not work on mandrake, and I dont plan buying another, are there generic drivers or something?

#3363

:o back a couple of years ago when I had 56k the lucent modems were good to be known and well supported in linux.I went to this website back then and Im glad that is still working Linmodems

check it out some the chipsets and stuff I remember some guy even having an RPM for my modem which made it easier.hopes this helps :D

#3378

cool, I went to a computer dealer and he didnt knew at all, I might check the brands, and go for it, but I have only like 25usd avaible to buy a new modem, so I might not be able to get a brand modem, maybe those that have a chipset from some brand, I might check, but those work for my computer, i dont want to invest a lot, since I plan to buy a Mac in August of 2003.

#3385

Well you know what mmr! if you buy a mac.. which i know may be a while wait.. you can download the PPC version of mandrake.. which of course you will know for a fact that it will work for the macs since it was specialy designed for a mac.. Then if you needed to reboot into mac os X.. you dont need to, you could just use the cool mac on linux app to run os x while in linux with close to native speeds since mac on linux doesnt emulate anything it just starts the other Os's boot process... its quite cool.. i wish to do that someday:)

-bolero

#3395

cool, it would be great. About my soundcard, is there a solution? like using generic drivers? if yes, how are they installed? Is because if I have no sound, it will turn to be boring.

#3397

I hear ya, without sound it will be boring as i use linux to listen to alot of my MP3's and do standard work. they work together nicely :). Im not sure though about your soundcard, what is its brand again? There wouldnt be generic drivers sadly.. so you would need drivers from the developers. Is your soundcard built into the motherboard? DID you disable plug and play in bios to allow easier detection among things?

-bolero

#3519

The brand is Forte Media, the model is fm801. I went to day to ask about modems, and they dont know about the models that work, a guy is selling me a US robotics, for 38usd, original, no chipset thing, but I want something cheaper, I dont want to spend a lot of money. The sound card is not in the motherboard, not integrated, it is a pci card, I havent disabled the plug&play, I will disable it, when I install it, tomorrow. When I run Mandrake on the emulator, a blue window, pops up, asking what to start from, so if I install it in a real way, there should say Windows XP too? If I remove mandrake later, that menu will disapear? Can I assing how much space I want for the partition? Tomorrow I'll install it, so I need to get clear ideas.

Hope you can answer my questions.

Thanks in advance
