[Help] Hard disk failure

I think my hard drive just failed.

I just bought a new DVD Burner, Firewire 400 card and a Canon video camera (Just a regular tape camera, nothign fancy) I have an 80GB hdd for storage etc and a 60GB hard drive with windows on it in my computer.

I installed the DVD drive and the FW card and windows had no problems. I hooked up my camera and began recording the video off it with Windows Movie Maker.

It got all the video and I was saving it. It had saved up to 99% and then I got the XP blue screen of death. My hard drive began to go tika-tika. As of now I don't know whihc hard drive it was, the 60 or the 80.

Since then I havn't been able to boot to windows, so I can't even get to safe mode.

In the BIOS It says I have one hard drive and for the slave it just has a bunch of random letters and symbols etc.

has my hard drive died? if it has, what could have been the problem?it was probably:

- The FW card

- The Canon camera

- The hard drive itself

- Windows

- the dvd burner (very unlikley considering it can eject etc and KNOPPIX detects it)

Help apreciated.

O.o what does KNOPPIX forensic utilities told you? Is there SMART on knoppix to check your HDD?

You've added a busload of hardware - but did you check the PSU? You probably need a stronger one.

Since you can't boot, your boot drive was grilled. A grilled secondary would at least get you into safe mode.

If the hard drive just keeps making a "Ticka-Ticka-Ticka" sound, thats probably the disk parking itself. I had a 100GB do that to me, its toast and the computer wont boot even if its the slave, not even in safe mode.

Unplug it and boot from the master disk without the slave [this assumes the problem is the slave] and if everything works assume your slave is dead. I still have mine hoping someday i can find someone to recover the information for me since it has every project my studio has recorded for the past 5 years backed up on it and if anyone knows for certain where that can be done send word my way.

It's a sad day when hard drives die.
