I've been using Iceman's techniques of replacing Windows system files not knowing there's program out there do it for you.

but i don't use floppy drive at all and I'm lazy to make a bootable CD that can access NTFS.

ctrl+alt+delete. quit explorer from there.

Now launch the dos command. File>Open>cmd

Do all the replacing from here.

I hit c-a-d, click Task Manager, click explorer.exe, hit end process, click ok.

Then i File->new Task->"cmd"

i copy new shell32.dll into system32

it says

"The process cannot access the file....because it is being used by another...."

what did I do wrong??

why not disable ntfs file protection and then replace them while running explorer as your shell... just do it myself and on the fly any time i want..

My method.

First move the dllcache into another directory. Then copy a new system file, rename the old file, paste the new file into system32 and tell windows to keep the new file when it complains. Repeat.

Boring but it works fine. All I do is add '.x' to the end of the old file, ie. 'shell32.dll.x that way all your original files are still there. once they are all replaced, copy all the new files into the dllcache folder and move it back to where it was.

I actually use the most long-taking method when I replace a bunch of Files. I just restart to dos. That will allways work. :woot:

Replacer works fine, just do every file your replacing one after the other then when your done restart. I replace many many files and it takes me only minutes. :canadian:

thecat2000: Try going Start > Run > expand and see if a cmd window popups up. If it does, run Replacer again and leave it open, then look in your %tmp%\Replacer_SafeToDel folder and see what's in there (or if it even exists). I haven't had this error reported before, so I'll have to look into it. Also, you might want to grab the latest version (updated a couple minutes ago), if you don't already have it.
