Good find. Finally a library enabled player (also) for Linux that does not need KDE/Gnome or other bloat. Never mind the looks - Linux players never got past Winamp2 without media library!
i like the dark interface , someone should port it to mplugin
anyway i think it's a toall ripoff of itunes (ok it's for linux too

I think this looks promising. It will be built on mozilla code, which could make it more open to thirdparty extensions. (Allthough their own code seems to be propertiary, so we'll just have to wait and see)
Perhaps if they can find the sweetspot between features and bloat...
they already addressed the songbird vs itunes issue.
Yeah - it's finally out (currently for windows only). First impressions:
- An 8 MB download
- That expends to a 33 MB install
- Handles about every type of audio file thrown at it without choking
- Eats 91 MB of RAM (worse than iTunes) 86 MB on page file (better than iTunes)
- No crossfade, equalizer, loudness or any sound enhancements (soon to come, they say)
- Not a single settings dialog
- Very poor ID3 tag handling, no album art etc., displays year column always as 0 (zero)
- Unix sorting: mistakes ABBA and Abba to be different groups, sorts a-ha behind Ziggy Marley (lowercase after uppercase) - use stricmp() in your qsort() callback, dumbasses
- Incomplete navigation: Previous button ignores shuffle history
- Plain ugly miniplayer mode
My summary:
Apart the expectable 'user preview' quirks, very promising, very cool, present functionality hints at huge future potential. I have seen much worse proof of concept releases.
Now I'm just dying to see the Linux version.

As for the things herd said, it probably won't become my first media player. Of course, that's just for now. I can definately see using it in the future, in a later full release. Been looking to throw away iTunes, but nothing quite felt the same. BTW, I'm only getting 50K RAM usage while playing a file. That's about around/less than my iTunes.
The only thing that kind of disappoints me is that it crashes a lot for me, just like Firefox (which it has the same engine as). : With a web browser it's bearable, but maybe not with a music player.

I do think it was ripped of of itunes, but heck, it looks alot better to me!
Ok ok.... ther may be a few coding flaws or whatever but, dude, they have like six guys work 24/7 on it trying to make it bettter.
so im guess it could still even be called a beta, with all the thing you say is wrong with it.
As an XP user I'm not sure why I would run a full 1.0 release of this if or when it comes rather than iTunes itself unless it halfed the resource consumption.
I wonder if its skinnable in the way that QCD is - possibly it could look like anything.

If you don't mind the occasional high overhead, this blows any other media player around. You can browse for new media. If there's media on a webpage, it'll take the songs etc and make a playlist at the bottom as if they were in your library. You can add the songs to your library or download quite a few them. It has some impressive searches. It doesn't really do the album art crap, but the fact that it plays everything includng songs from the iTunes store. I don't think there's a better way to integrate your entire media library, online and ofline, than this app.
As far as the iTunes clone skins: "Good artists copy, great artists steal." -Picasso
