Widescreen Monitors

Hello! I am new here, and did try searching, so please be gentle...

First off let me say that I am not a Mac user (I'm a gamer) but really love Macs. I currently use a Dell (disgraceful, I know ;)) and have another brand new Dell still sitting in its box (I won't get it till christmas).

Anyway, with my new Dell I got an Ultrasharp 20" Widescreen, which is very similar to the Apple 20" cinema display.

So here comes my question: Being a gamer, I am wondering if I made the right choice on monitors. In other words, will my games be compatible with my widescreen, will they only use a part of the screen, or (shudder) will everything in my games look fat and disfigured?

I am hoping they will work, but if they only use part of my screen I will still be satisfied (Anything is better than this 15" CRT). If everything appears fat, I suppose the monitor could "fall" out of my window and be covered by my accidental damage warrenty. :)

I do hope this is in the right forum, I couldn't decide if it belonged here or in the Windows forum.

I got the place for you buddy, cuz I just got myself a widescreen aswell

and I had issues when playing games, here you go

Widescreen Gaming Forum

Masterlist

and there is the list of games that supports widescreens whether they do it natively or by hack (NFSMW) or creating a cfg file (DOOM3), etc.

Everything is pretty clear and easy to do, even the hacks.

and as for the place to make you thread, you could of made it in the general hardware subforum, but here will do.

I'm not sure which games you are talking about... Last I checked many of the new games (HL2, Quake4 etc.) support Wide screen format, and even though I don't have Widescreen monitor, when I spawned HL2 across my dualscreen (2 x 17" LG flatron) it looked nothing less that awesome... :)

I'm using an acer 19inch Widescreen Monitor.

I'm playing Battlefield 2 with it and it works! It's streching the 1024x768 resulution to the full screen. I had problems to play this game befor i renew my system and install the newest nvidia grafik driver.

you can mod it so it uses widescreen.

add this to your shortcut +menu 1 +widescreen 1 +szx 1920 +szy 1200

of course you change the 1920 and the 1200 to fit the resolution your moniter runs best with. I did it with my 19", no stretching!

This thread is now more or less 2 months old, meaning I have had my new monitor for about that ammount of time.

I have had mixed results getting my games to run on widescreen - SC4 RH simply refuses to play on a widescreen format, I have even checked on widescreengamingforum.com and there is no way to get it to run on a wide screen.

Guildwars was a piece of cake, 1680x1050 is listed as a default resolution in it. No hacking needed.

Battlefield 2 I really couldn't notice any streching, but to be safe I modded the target in its shortcut, and am happy enough with it.

And yah, thats about it.

My guess is you could use a hacking application to change your resolution on the fly in the memory;

I did it with NFSMostWanted a couple of months ago using ArtMoney. A guy HERE explains how to do it with NFSMW but *I guess* it could be used the same way with SC4 RH.

I dunno might work...

I too am looking into widescreen (belated xmas-tax return gift) and have been looking at two models, a viewsonic and dell..what models do you guys have/like?

I'm also a gamer (hl2, ut, doom) with dual 6800 video cards.

#362688

I have a ViewSonic VA1912wb 19" Widescreen, runs great, no ghost at all in games :D

Dells are also very good.

#362705

I have a dell 24inch wide aspect, i was going to get an apple 24inch cinema display, but i read the reviews and all reviews point to dells wide aspect displays, all of which say u actualy see better blacks, instead of greys in the apple displays, i greatly injoy mine, im a bit of a gamer too, i play cod and cod2 and HL2 and both support widescreen and man ive never been happyier.

#363057

As I mentioned, I have a 20" widescreen Dell Ultrasharp - no ghosting at all, nice sharp text and graphics, bright and vibrant, works really well.

... with dual 6800 video cards.

You sicken me...:)

Who on earth needs that much graphics power?

P.S. Ignore me, I'm just jealous....Just leave me alone to cry a little in the corner over there.
