Yahoo Widget Engine 3.0

it's out...kick the tires....

What Is the Yahoo! Widget Engine?

The Yahoo! Widget Engine (formerly known as Konfabulator) is a JavaScript runtime engine for Windows and Mac OS X that lets you run little files called Widgets that can do pretty much whatever you want them to. Widgets can be alarm clocks, calculators, can tell you your WiFi signal strength, will fetch the latest stock quotes for your preferred symbols, and even give your current local weather.

What sets Yahoo! Widget Engine apart from other scripting applications is that it takes full advantage of today's advanced graphics. This allows Widgets to blend fluidly into your desktop without the constraints of traditional window borders. Toss in some sliding and fading, and these little guys are right at home in Windows XP and Mac OS X.

The format for these Widgets is completely open and easy to learn so creating your own Widgets is an extremely easy task.

For the "skinning" crowd, Yahoo! Widget Engine is a dream come true. You can easily change the look, feel, layout, even functionality of a Widget so that it matches your lifestyle, your desktop, or the pants or skirt you have on that day.

i'd like to know what the difference is between this and the previous version of konfabulator

#339082

they added a bunch of missing, but much needed stuff: XML DOM, XPath, XMLHttpRequest.

Also, the whole thing is now properly Yahoo!-ified

Maps seems cool to, bummer most stuff is US-only :(

#339087

Bleh!

Oh well, it was bound to happen.

#339089

on a tangent...did arlo get rich from this, ya think?

#339091

Well then, I guess I'll have to look into converting all my Konfab widgets into Avedesk format.

#339092

why's that?

#339096

Before i download it, can someone verify if it comes with extra bloatware, ads, and all that junk. I don't really trust yahoo all too much...

#339103

so far, no bloated ads, runs fine so far, just more widigets and tools which are neat for someone like myself....

the map is cool, the calendar not bad, and the widigets go on....It's just a preference...

But it's nothing like AveDesk and Sysstat cause these widigets are more personal and the DTP is by far the best widiget, view some great images and boom pick a wallpaper...

but like it was mentioned above

"stuff: XML DOM, XPath, XMLHttpRequest." these widigets are neat too, and I wonder what the team Yahoo will wip up...

#339115

I'm kinda upset that they changed the name but yeah it was bound to happen. Still, it's dissappointing. I was actually hoping they wouldn't.

#339117

konfabualtor is a great produvct .. and yeah he will have got rich(ish)

#339120

Konfabulator is a good program, it's easy to use, has tons of widget. But I believe that AveDesk is much more powerful and has much more potential, it may not be very easy to use like Konfabulator, but it sure can do a lot more in my opinion.

Yahoo! Widget Engine is cool, thanks for sharing by the way :)

#339126

Could've been worse they could of called it Yahoobulator or Gadgets...oops...sorry couldn't help myself. Like the new site though.

Look for my first Konfab widget soon...it will be an AveDesk RSS widget. :P

Serendipityguy do you write ad copy or something? :D

#339144

lol thats just as bad as Fabulous Yahoo Widgets haha, yeah but this new name does nothing for me. as long as it continues to deliver incredible widgets then im perfectly fine with the name.

#339225

It does not support the chinese windows system

#339655

What was wrong with prefixing Konfabulator with Yahoo? Something like "Yahoo's Konfabulator" that way you don't lose the Konfabulator brand recognition.

EDIT: Actually thinking about it Yahoo Widget's makes it clear what the program is about.

#339664

the warning messages make me sick.

As soon as I try to open a non default widget (3rd party one) I got a warning message, this is really annoying, not fun

#339669

Guess I'm sticking with 2.1 until somebody at Yahoo! gets their head out of their @$$.:|

#341048

that means you'll have to stick with 2.1 forever lol
