Anyone had any first hand experience with data recovery services in the US? I'm hoping that the data is still recoverable and was wondering if anyone has used a service to do so. Google searches result in numerous hits and I hate to just randomly pick a company without any recommendations.
[help] Powerbook hard drive failed
My only experience has been that it is very, very expensive. There is also no guarantee that the data can be salvaged. Best bet is to try and find some place that won't charge you an arm and a leg regardless if they can salvage anything. Some places charge per MB recovered. so if they get nothing out of the drive, you pay nothing.
Also what about repair to the drive? i ran into that option once and was able to get it repaired just enough to be able to plug it in and pull all my files off.
Also, where in the us are you? I thought you were oversees somewhere? There are a few decent places down in the DC area...but i would have to get back to you with names.
Just to throw this out there, are you sure the drive is dead? Have you tried hooking it up to another puter and seeing if it can be read that way?

Fairly certain the drive is dead.... it doesn't even appear to be spinning...
And yes... I'm in the Caribbean (Trinidad)... so I figure I'll have to ship it back to the states.
i would be careful who you get to repair your drive, one of my work friends lost his data and sent it to a local company that said they couldn't find anything, then sent it to an international company who said the the hard drive was tampered with (by the first company, who didn't no what they were doing) so the data was completely lost
