[help] Logging onto Mac

Hey People,

I updated my Mac with the latest security updates. I try to log back in by entering my username and password and the login box disappears. What happens next is that the busy cursor appears and the machine stays busy for a long time and a small speaker icon appears on the right.

I've tried to repair the disk using Disk Utility and Disk Warrior with no luck. I've tried to start up in safe boot but same thing. I then tried to start up using the shell but I can't copy my Start Up prefs to another folder because I can't get write permission as the disk is in read-only mode.

Anyone got any ideas why this could be?

What have you been doing on your mac lately? i ask cause you can't find a solution until you know the cause. Are you using themes, changing icons, installing 3rd party programs...

Nothing like that. I just installed the updates.

The only other thing it could be to do with is fonts.

I had a folder of fonts that I tried to install but extensis suitcase wouldn't install but crash. That was before installing the updates. When I installed the updates the system restarted (i think - i can't remember!).

Start your mac with [sHIFT] held down to disable the loading of extensions.

If your mac boots this way, you then need to delete your login prefs file.

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist

Once deleted, your mac should be able to boot normally and rebuild the prefs file automatically.

That didn't work either. I couldn't log in with Safe Boot(holding down: Shift).

I'm guessing that my user profile is most probably corrupt.
