[help] msstyles and fonts, icons, wallpapers

i just have one question for which i have searched quite a lot. it seems even here the people who asked did not receive any positive clues up to now. sorry if this is repeated.

when applying a non-microsoft theme, it does work only partially: it does not skin my windows bars not change the fonts. the wallpapers contained in the theme as well as icons are applied.

in 'display-properties', under the tab 'appearence' and 'windows and buttons' i have only two possibilities: windows classic, windows xp.

i also don't really comprehend what the deal is aith msstyles and theme. have lots of msstyles but the windows appearance manager kinda does not employ them.

i was using windowblinds with no hassels, but since it really slowed down my laptop, i uninstalled it, hacked the uxtheme.dll and started to look for osx-look themes. i hacked using uxtheme multipatcher fr from some french customization website. i am using french windows xp. that's how i have arrived to this issue. by the way, i am sorta think it's really pain in the a..s, this dlls!!!

please help, anything would be appreciated.

thx dunce

MSstyles (visual styles) do no replace icons or wallpapers. Also to be able to use the same font the theme was intented to work with, you need to have it installed.

You need to put your themes into C:WINDOWSResourcesThemes

Next time use thread titles that mean something.

it's not necessary to post a thread in more than one place. NC was trying to help you in your previous thread, just because he didn't reply right away to your last post doesn't mean he never will. or that no one will help later on for that matter.

.theme files are files that contain simple information on what wallpaper, icons, and visual style to apply. it does not contain the visual style itself. i would suggest that you do not use these as it might change some aspects of you desktop that you do not want changed. instead change each thing individually.

.msstyle files need to be placed in a folder of the same name (Example.msstyle goes in a folder named Example) in the C:WindowsResourcesThemes directory for them to show up in the Display Properties dialogue under Appereance.

the only help i can give to your specific problem is this: since you are using a French language uxtheme patch, you should postthis problem on the site you got it from, as those are the people who are likely to have used it and know how to fix the problem. other than that i can only suggest is that you UNpatch your system, reboot, REpatch, reboot, and see if it is working.

thanks all, i am sorry for posting twice.

Just because it takes someone over three hours to respond doesn't mean we don't know what we're doing ;).

What it sounds like is that you're trying to apply .theme files with an inappropriately patched uxtheme.dll. .Theme files will change your wallpaper and icons, but if your uxtheme.dll file isn't patched properly, it won't change those.

Use this: http://www.portraitofakite.com/downloads/U...cher%20v1.2.zip

It won't matter that you're using a French copy of XP...this is a good patcher to use ;).

Try it, and then find a .msstyles file to apply (double click it--don't use a .theme file, but a .msstyles one).

So anyway, in the future, please do not create multiple threads for the same topic.

P.S: Post back in this one if you have any trouble. Later, I'll answer your other questions as well.

thanks so much, for all members and especially NC. i have emplyed this mentioned patcher, after uninstalling the french one. it worked out perfectly and i am enjoying brushed tiger vs. it's so cool! i really prefer that to wb. just, in any case in future, do you happen to know, how can i revert things, to have an original uxtheme dll back?

and of course, still in looking for more brilliant vstyles!

have a good week! this one is goona be good for me and freshly brushed and tigerished machine!

I don't recall if Flyakite's Patcher makes a backup of the uxtheme.dll file, but if it does, it will probably be located in C:WindowsSystem32 and titled something like uxtheme.dll.bak.

If it's not there, don't fret. There's no reason to have the original uxtheme.dll--you can use Luna even with the modded one. Though if you still want the original, you could probably pull it off your Windows XP Installation CD.
