is it possible to get msn incorporated onto the desktop so that is just shows the names of the people who are online/offline rather than it being in an individual window? i know it is possible with aim/trillian. if it is possible for msn, how?

You can also check out a program I made called MSNstatus. The thread can be found in the community applications section here. it has a very low memory footprint and won't be seen as spyware by Microsoft Antispyware. 
There is also a konfabulator widget being developed skinnabe with several skins already.
