Emulating Xbox on a PC

I guess this is impossible or I would already know about it, but anyway;

If I put an Xbox hard drive in my PC, could I make it bootable and make the computer think it's an xbox?

Since an Xbox uses an Intel chip, I gather it wouldn't be much different on my CelD 2.6GHz (Xbox cpus and intel's are both x86)

Is there some information that is stored on the rom of an xbox taht it needs? if so, couldn't I -if it is possible- get that info and run it on my ram and then boot up into Xbox OS then insert an Xbox disk and play?

I gather i'd have problems controlling it, but I'll think about that later :P

well if all the xbox system information (xbox os) is stored on the hard drive and the hard drive is formated NTFS or FAT32 then you could at least read (i don't know about booting it you would have to try it to find out) i wouldn't suggest it thou cause you would void your warranty by opening the xbox, if you do try to do this, the new xbox 360 controller can be use with a pc

I advise you to post this question over at NG emu They know a hellofalot more about (Xbox) emulation then could be expected from this forum, which is basically about mimicing the os X interface (hence: Aqua-soft}

You could probaly do that (the rom thing) of course this will make your computer unusable as a regular PC and basicaly what you just did was build a very expensive xbox with a crapload of work instead of just going out and dumping all of 150$ on one.

Sorry man, the Xbox Hard drive is just that.. a Hard drive. In the xbox it's a harddrive, in your PC it's a Hard drive.

That which does all the "Magical Code conversion- ala Game play" is the xbox itself.

Since you need an xbox to Get the harddrive, save yourself the trouble of trying to get the tiny xbox HD to work in your PC to play games, and put a Big HD in the Xbox..

The reason it will never work (at least the way he wants it to) is due to the fact that the XBox does not store it's Operating System on the HDD as PC's do. It's OS is completely on the BIOS, a chip on the motherboard. So basically, unless someone figures out how to flash a XBox OS off of the mainboard in the XBox to the BIOS Chip on the mainboard of a PC, it's not going to work.

well it is possible to make the xbox act as a linux or maybe even a pc...

but not really the other way around.

because the hd is an issue in its self. the xbox has a to unlock the hd so that it can be accessed.

the pc wont be able to do this as it doesn't know the code.. so if you were to get an xbox fixed for a hd failure you would prob end up replacing the hd and board.

the only way you can make the pc even access the xbox hd is to open the xbox up. open your pc turn on your pc and make it pause before it finished the post and finds all the drives.

then turn your xbox on and as soon as the m$ logo appears you have to unplug the hd ide in the xbox and plug it in the computer and make it post and find the drive.

thats one of the ways to get the hd working on the pc.

or you would just have to unlock the hd in the xbox using a soft mod or hard mod

but to answer your question about can an pc be used to emulate and xbox with just the hd the answer would be no. because even then you would still need the bios. and even with the bios you still need some sort of software that can use the bios.

and things still won't work right and this can be proven with the psx emu's floating around the web.

maybe if you flashed the bios onto the pc bios chip as nss majin buu said then maybe but im sure there would be all kinds of other problems mainly hardware related

the easiest way to go about this is to buy an empty case take apart the xbox and stick all the parts into the tower and get a vga adaptor plug, a few of those xbc to usb adaptors and ones that convert usb to xbc and fit it all together.. although this will just be an xbox mod and not an emulation. but im sure you would be able to trick a few people.

When they're formatted, there's a lock code placed on it so only its original xbox will recognize it. So yes, it is phyisically impossible to emulate an xbox simply by placing an xbox HD in a pc. It is possible, though, to run osx on it, like in the link above. That's my next project. Also, check out xbox media center - that's what I'm running on my xbox and it is well worth the effort.

That's not strictly true! .. If you have the eeprom.bin there are tools that will allow you to unlock the HD. That drive can then be locked using a different xbox's eeprom.bin and used in that other machine! That's how I softmod Xboxes with big hard drives!

Hey Caroline - My xbmc won't connect to the internet. I'm in a dorm room, and I suspected that it was just the school's internet connection. but I took it home, only to reveal the same problem. I haven't spent a lot of time trying to fix it, but is there a quick fix for the problem?
