A month or so ago I'd started this in SysStats for AveDesk. Reason I stopped is the overwhelming drain on resources. Eg. Weather, RSS Feeds, System Monitors.
Maybe a quick solution if your up for it yourself is something modular. Just random thoughts.

I remember there was also some other progarm called Longhorn Sidebar. Well, you know, the best way to get it is Google.
those sidebar programs are cpu intensive and not a very solid piece of software. if it were made by avedesk, id feel more secure using it. and i'm sure it would take up much less memory and cpu power. and true launch bar only adds little "widgets" to the startbar, nothing great and graphical like the longhorn sidebar

Agree with you on the resource issue but, Desktop Sidebar is fairly stable...don't use them myself.

Agree with you on feeling more secure. However, I had three cpu/drive monitors, weather feed, mail checker & only one RSS feed built in and had already topped 25meg's. That put it over Desktop sidebar. 
CPU draw would all be relative to what you wanted. I'm sure a clock & some system monitoring configs would come in substantially lower than sidebars.
maybe doing the gadgets from the vista sidebar would be enough - the news gadget, the clock & the slideshow gadget.
tnese have already been done for konfabulator, some also for desktop x, so it would be nice to have them on avedesk too, and since there is already an rss feeder on the systats page, a vista version of it would be good 
I just made a sidebar image and mounted it on the side with Samurize and put widgets over it.
Worked well, until I passed my Vista craze.
You can be misled by the memory requirements for Desktop Sidebar. It's a .Net app and if it loads the .Net framework into memory it looks like it's using a lot more memory than it might otherwise. If you've got multiple .Net apps then it wouldn't look like much, but for a lot of people it's the only .Net app they run, so it gets accused of being a memory hog.
