Yup, i bring my Pismo Powerbook to school everyday, and so far ive scratched the rubberish top a bunch and cracked the sides where the battery and DVD drive are..... but thats cause i take it out alot during school. Go for a lightweight holder to put your ibook in then put in your backpack. As for the keyboard marks, put something like a cover over the keyboard when you close the lid.

wow no wonder you have problems.. you put in in with disgusting dirty sharp rugged smashing heavy books on a thin un protective scratchy bag that is thrown around like a basketball. mostlikely your lcd and harddrive will die quickly
seriously get a laptop bag. anykind with any sort of protection. if it was a windows laptop you could feck it how ever joo want, but don't do that to apple 
Agreed. Even with a proper laptop messager bag, my Bio book did in my last monitor. Sincerely consider not only a different bag for your laptop, but also a thin gel or leather cloth to place over your keyboard before closing the lid.

I own one of those serendipityguy (blue and silver). Again, still don't advise against heavy books and pressure.
I personally recommend an InCase. Thick gel padding; custom fitted for 12in iBooks/Powerbooks (they make bigger if I'm not mistaken).
Why would you treat your iBook like that?
I realize that you need to carry your books somehow, but a little care wouldn't go astray.
The weight of a book on a laptop is kinda like strapping a grand piano to the roof of your car.

Yes, with a little pressure the keyboard will rub against the display.
When I got my iBook (2ndhand) there were marks on the display, but luckily I was able to wipe them off with a damp cloth - I gues it was just keyboard grime (yuck 
)
The plastic that iBooks are made of can bend and break.

yes I agree, Only if you use the bag only for the lap-top, and not try to stick other important stuff in it like Power cables, pens or anything like that.... Just try to keep if for the lap top only.
No other way. (except for the ocassional CD)
have you looked at those OGIO backpacks w/ the seperate compartment for a laptop? They were extremely popular way back when I worked in hell (aha... at the Sports Authority). They are durable, offers lots of padding, and actually pretty decent looking, cosmetically speaking. I'm sure lots of other manufacturers have produced similar bags. I personally would check out the nearest Best Buy or Office Depot
All I have to say about g8trtim's comment is never ever shop for a bag at Best Buy. They are all terrible with the occasional rarity. You're better off looking at an Apple Store or searching online for highly rated products.
I have slip cases for my >3 lb Vaios and they do fine in my bookbag. I wouldn't even think of putting a laptop in my book bag naked. I coddle my toys too much for that. I like them shiny and scratch-free.
I put my powerbook in my old jansport backpack every day with the booq vyper case, and I have never had any problems.

Then I put it all into my backpack. Never had any problems with the keys pressing against the display cause the screen protector acts as a cushion between the two.
you know what would work well to cover the keys... head to your nearest fabric store (or even walmart) and grab a small piece of fleece. they offer unlimited options in colors and patterns. my mom makes blankets for the troops and hurricane victims with this stuff. its prolly about 2-3mm thick and definitely wont scratch anything.
also, i have seen 3mm thick neoprene (similar to a 3mil wetsuit) at fabric stores. you would need maybe only 1/4 yard depending on the application and would work well to cover the keys...
