I using Process Explorer, and I've noticed that RK Launcher grabs ~15% every other side even when it's NOT being invoked to launch something. I don't know what Window events, it polling, but that seems excessive. And it doesn't see to matter what things I change in the control panel of RK.
Anybody else notice this?

As a Developer, I hate it when people post everything as bug. That's why I wanted to see if anyone else is seeing this behavior before I "officially" log it. Also, someone may know to tell me which setting to tweak.
The only docklet that I have is the builtin Recycle bin.
Any sugggestions though?,

It uses on average 0-5% with lots of custom yz and objectdock docklets loaded for me
Empty your recycle bin?, I've noticed when the recycle bin have a lot of stuff it's comsuming a lot of cpu.

Weird, I should have been getting the email notifications of activity. Oh well.
Okay, first it was the quantity of stuff in the recycle bin that was causing the CPU usage issue. I had about 2 GB that I hadn't bothered to go through. Now, CPU is at 1% after the cleanup. Now that I know, I should've unchecked the show count/size info checkbox.
As far as software I've written, I don't have anything that is publicly available. I write Powerbuilder, Oracle PL/SQL, C#, PHP, and Java, but for the corporate world.
I'm a little surprised at the "icy" tone from colraffs & evolvedmatt. So in the end, I was right to not log this as a bug. It was indeed just a configuration issue. So the proper path was to verify my environment before dumping in another bug.

I do have Symantec AV. I didn't see any specific configuration stuff within Symantec about tampering. Which version do you? I'm using ProcessTamer to marshall RTVScan down to a lower priority.

When I mouse over the dock 54-98, and I get the magnification wave, my CPU is 42%. That's on a P4 3.2 Ghz HT.

yes...that's normal for when you're mousing over the dock and it's doing its magnification "wave"
I recently ditched using a dock because of this problem.
I posted it in the Bug thread.
Basicly, my computer will freeze for half a second or so at regualr intervals.
It never used to do that but a few weeks ago it started acting up.
I don't have any docklets either, just RK Launcher.
Definitely, check how much you have in the RecycleBin. I have 2 GB in there... Select "Property of Docklet"... and turn OFF "Show Number of items and size". That part of the API is probably what is killing you.

I seem to have the same problem as Flurry and Kenta. I recently stopped using RK Launcher after I found out that RK Launcher uses 30% to 40% of my processor when I hover an icon and it magnifies.. I have a P4 3.4 ghz so this is quite some power it has to use

It still happens when I make sure that my garbage bin is empty and when I disable "Show Number of items and size".
I used to get the same experience with RK Launcher when I first use it. It uses up the CPU power on my PC especially when I minimized an application to the dock. But after done some basic setting I managed to reduce the problem.
What I did was reducing the icons magnifying size to 35% (my setting). For me the preset magnifying size are to big and for me it kinda look awkward.

I'm new to this dock having used objectdock for so long. Anyway objectdoct slowed down my pc and now fails to boot. Anyway I ditched it. I actually like this dock though adding items to the dock is not so straight forward as objectdock.
Well I had the cpu problem and reading this thread, by the way thanks jlv for not posting as a bug, I've managed to solve the problem.
However what I want to know is why does this happen?
Is it some kinda programming issue or more fundamental to the Windows OS?
I like jlv write proriaray programmes (Java, MatLab, JAS) though I'm new to it and just curious for educatoional reasons.

I think you are mistaken, it uses at that moment 30-40% of your cputime, absolutely not 30-40% of your CPU power!
Actually all tasks you do will make your CPUtime jump up... even if you open Word..
and it doesn't really matter* if you do it on a 1.5 Ghz or a 3.4 Ghz, cputime will jump because the task requires the cpu attention.
*Ofcourse on slower pc's it will matter and cputime can jump a bit higher. But I hope the point is clear.
