Yeah... I'm sick of never having the right font at the right time, so I want to start making my own fonts. I know that it takes a lot of time and effort to create a font, but I think it'll be worth it. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
[help] Font-ography
like 6 years ago I used a program called fontgrapher from macromedia
Im not shure you realise how hard it actualy is......
I'm interested in what your purpose is in making a new font. First of all, are you trying to make a new font to emulate more of the OS X font rendering look or is it something totally different? Furthermore, are you planning to create a new font FROM SCRATCH or to modify an existing font?
You do realize that it takes a lot of training and understanding of how fonts work to create a complete font. It's not only "drawing" the lines to the font but an in-depth understanding of hinting, getting it to display correctly under different font renderers, etc. that makes the process highly technical and involved. As a start, download the trial version of Font Creator or if your Japanese is good enough, grab TTEdit or OTEdit, open up any font, and marvel at the complexity of all the options available to you. Also, different font formats are rendered differently under Windows XP.
If you're trying to create a font from scratch, I'm sorry but I can't help you. If you're trying to merge fonts together or font smoothing, I may be able to help you a little on this.
Woha, if you've planed to create a completely new font i can advise you to abolish your idea. People always dosn't realize how hard it is to create good fonts. For sure you can try it but without success. Font- Designers working hard a view years to create a font that can be written in a text. Of course 95% of all fonts you find can't be really written. (hope you understand me
)
Analize fonts and creating a easy one was part of my study and i can tell you, it is not fun but hard work. Not to create simple letters but they have to have the same face and "flow" together in every combination and thats DAMN hard!!
I can only give the biggest respect to all those (like my Prof.) who create useable fonts... it's their life!
But i wish you much luck with it, and if you've only planned to slightly mod a font i'm very intrested in your result.
//Good luck and all staying power again, Cheers Toner
Kerning (spacing) all the letters in a font by hand is tougher than tough.
Do some reading, research a little typography theory...
...then get creative!
Good tools? Fontographer, TypeTool, FontLab...
To answer some of your questions... I am writing this font from scratch. I have an idea of how I want it to look, but it's not a derivation of any other font. I little free time, but I want this to take that time up; fonts are big things, I know, but this is my little project now
Any help anyone can give, I thank you for.

Good luck with this project. Experience with Illustrator or some form of vector program will be of invaluable use to you.
Ugh.. I was hoping I could avoid learning Illustrator right now... oh well. Maybe I should get out the old CorelDRAW discs ![]()
