[help] Ripping Software

Hey Guys,

I need to rip a DVD to an mpg or avi file so I can make a custom DVD. Whats the best way to achieve this?

I have DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. Does anyone also know of any good free DVD authoring software?

Thanks!

Check out gordian knot, it's one of the best I've used (not real easy to figure out at first, but there are some nice walkthroughs on their website).

Also, this question was just asked the other day, and answered in a lot greater length, so you might want to try searching.

Thanks for that. With GKnot can I rip stuff and import the stuff into a DVD authoring tool like iMovie for Mac or Windows Movie Maker?

Well, you can use GKnot to make avi files of whatever file size/resolution/quality you want, and I would assume you can do whatever you want with the avi file after that.

Excellent!!! [Dreams about world domination...]

Where abouts are the guides for ripping or how to use GKnot? I can't seem to find them. Thanks!

It's one of the quick links on www.doom9.org (the GKnot-SBC one). Just click on the drop down box on the upper right.

Thanks guys with the info.

I'm stuck. with Gknot, i want to rip a particular chapter. So I select IFO mode from DVD Decrypter and select the required chapter. That gives me the VOB file etc...

I'm using divx3 encoding.

Now back in GKnot, I want to correct the resolution but the Bits/Pixels*Frames is always 0. Thats worrying. The resolution was set at something like PAL 4:3, 720 x something can't remember but it changed slightly after I smart-cropped the file.

Anyway, I go to encode my file and I get an error message from Nanodub saying the resolution is too small or something along those lines.

The resulting AVI is only 8kb!! does anybody know how to fix the Bits/Pixels x Frames issue because I think that may be the issue?

How big did you ask GKnot to make your output file? Where is your resolution slider set? I don't know how you could get 0 bits/frame...

#326085

Ok, for some reason there was a file attached in the bit rate section. Removed that, now i get > 2.0 for the Bits.

thanks for sparing some of ur time ppoppe!

I've attached a couple of screen shots.

Let me know how it works out, if you can. I've spent a lot of time playing with this program (mostly ripping my DVDs so I can go on trips and watch off my hard drive, to save battery and all), so I might be able to answer further questions if you have them.

Yeh it worked out. I used something else in the end: AutoGK. With Gknot I couldn't get the sound to work with the chapter. I'm just glad i got it done in the end.

Thanks!
