Dell's XPS Gen 4 3.6GHz vs Apple PowerMac 3.6GHZ

Tell me what guy's think, I have a Mac Mini 1.42 GHz and a Pc Dell XPS GEN 4 3.6GHz and in The apple website thay had graph's on which computers are the fastest and the PowerMac G5 2.7GHz was faster than DELL'S XPS GEN 4 that was 3.6GHz, and faster than Alienware Aurora series. And now that apple is using a 3.6 GHz in there computer next year what's going to be the difference between PowerMac 3.6 GHz from DELL'S XPS 3.6GHz intels or any other computer that's has a 3.6 GHz intel's. With this 3.6 GHz Intel PowerMac's, will Mac Games ever will catch up with PC online gaming library. Do you think Steve Jobs will also focus on the gaming side of the Apple computers, beside's being for Professionals use.

That's why I might not wait until 2007 for a Intel Mac sense I already own a 3.6GHz intel, I just might pick up a PowerMac Quad for christmas and have it both ways.

PowerMac 3.6 GHz should be a lot more powerful than the intel 3.6ghz processor

But how PowerMac 3.6GHz has more power than a Pc 3.6Ghz if there both using Intel's processors. That doesn't make any sense to me at all , isn't it the same processors that Intel's uses for Pc are going to be in PowerMac's?

At the moment, though, they aren't made by Intel.

My guess is that the difference in performance per clock speed is partly that the PowerPCs are specifically optimized for Apple hardware, and partly because they're just a better design, but you'd have to ask someone else for a definite answer there. What that means for the Macintels coming up, I'm not sure. Most likely, the difference between a Mac 3.6 and a PC 3.6 won't be nearly as much as, say, the current difference between a Mac 1.42 and an Intel 1.42.

In any case, you obviously have too much money =D so wouldn't you like to donate some to my new computer fund?

The only reason i'm buying so many computer because ever sense I purchase Dell XPS GEN 4 back in Jan. 05. I found that I made a bad mistake on buying the PC and when I purchase the Mac Mini it was ok for a while but know I need something more. I've been working 6 days a week ever sense Feb of 05 and getting alot of overtime to pay for the PowerMac G5 quad or the PowerMac G5 Intel but don't know which one to drop money on, so i'm not exactly rich, just working alot.

Gaming will never, ever be the same between the two systems. Almost every game designed for PCs is built on DirectX, which is proprietary to Microsoft. Hence, there is no DirectX for Mac. All games have to be ported to OpenGL. Also, consider a processor is only a small portion of a PC. Memory (type, speeds, cas timings etc), chipsets (northbridge, southbridge, type), video cards, SLI or Crossfire, hard drives (rpm, cache, ncq), etc. ALL factor into a computers performance. Also keep in mind there are TONS of different processor types out there rated at 3.6ghz. There is no one specific Intel 3.6ghz processor. That's like saying two Ford vehicles with a V8 in them are close in specs. Not hardly.

And Steve Jobs isn't going to focus on the gaming aspect. He can't control that. The only reason you see major games on the Mac is because those companies are the only ones who can afford to develop a version for both platforms. Small-time game companies simply can't afford the development.

You should not buy one platform over the other based on speed. Buy based on your needs. If you are a hardcore gamer, a PC will pretty much always be your best bet for years to come. If you are a designer or deal with a lot of video, the Mac would be your best bet. On a side note, I have heard that XP installs flawlessly on the Mac Intel dev kits, so you may want to hold out if you still want to use XP without having to run in a virtual environment.

(on an slightly unrelated note, what is with Apple only making 512mb of memory standard on their highest model? If I was paying $3300 for a computer I'd damn well want 1gig minimum standard.)

I'm sure future macs will be absolute beasts performance-wise, but if you're really concerned about speed and games, I'd stick with PC.

Mostly for upgradability, but also for all the great old/current games that will probably never be ported to future macs.

How the hell do you know Apple will use a 3.6Ghz P4 CPU in Macs? Sometimes people are so clueless it stuns me.

1. DEVELOPER MACHINES have Pentium 4s at 3.6. They are NOT consumer Machines

2. Apple will NOT use Pentium 4 in their consumer Macs

3. Some posts in this thread made me laugh my ass off :P

Geez

If apple is not going to use Pentium 4 in there computer, then what type of Intal chip there going to be using. And the Developer Machines that has the Pentium 4 at 3.6, creating binary sofware for both the Macs and the mac with intel in them. How would anything work on the mac with intel in them that has a 3.6 Ghz pentium 4 developing for their software. Will it work on any Intel processors?

First of all i believe Intel learned from AMD, that GHz isnt everything. So now they concentrate more on other things like how much work can be done per clock cycle instead of pure speed, primarily the reason why AMD is much better for gaming then Intels. I highly doubt Mac's will have 3.6 Ghz intels, then again i heard they disregarded IBM's PowerPC's because they failed to reach 4GHz. I higly doubt Mac's will use Pentium 4's, probably a custom made Intel cpu instead. Intel abandoned reaching new speed levels and concentrate elsewhere, they couldve easily released a pentium4 capible of reaching 4Ghz but that wouldnt have changed much. Like Unbeliever said these high speed intel cpu's arent for consumer machines.

They are going to be using Yonah/Merom in notebooks and Conroe (or more probably Woodcrest) in their desktop machines. And your ignorance about CPUs and CPU architectures is astounding.

Processor speed have NOTHING to do with CPU architecture and Apple will be using the same x86 ISA. Apps written for and on a P4 @ 3.6 Ghz will work just fine on a DC 2.5 Ghz Merom. They will only need a bit of tweaking to fully use the new CPUs power but they will work fine just the way they are.

By the way P4 Netburst CPUs are way too hot and inefficient to be used in Macs and Steve said it himself. Apple didn't switch for the current chips, they switched for Yonah/Meron & Conroe/Woodcrest.

@ ShadyApple - They will be using regular Intel chips. Also Intel wasn't able to reach 4Ghz at sustainable yields and acceptible heat emition but luckily for them, the Israeli team came with Pentium M which is a Pentium 3 derivate. Apple switched cause according to Jobs, PowerPC had no future on the consumer platform, not because they couldn't reach 4Ghz. His original promise was 3Ghz but IBM hit the wall at 65nm and never delivered. I think IBM is happy as a major chip supplier for all of the next gen consoles and sees little reason to continue the development of consumer PowerPC chips, especially now that they have what they call the next butter - Cell.

I hear they're going to introduce something even better than Conroe/Woodcrest:

take that ignorance!

Does unbeliever works at Apple because it seems like he knows everything about apple and apple computers, his like a spy sneaking around apple laboratories in Cupertino and writing down info and post it here. Maybe I don't know sh** about CPU but I want to learn how, So I don't understand why you always talk down to people, I think that's not fair for me or to other members that just want to ask a simple question, even if it is stupid and it doesn't make any sense. Fact the matter is we all don't know what apple is really going to do until we see the actual product in the stores and using them, Like on page 17 in MACWORLD OCT issue "So there's no real reason that Apple couldn't switch chip providers. However, a second competitive supplier might lead to less-expensive Macs down the road" that may be the writer opinion but it might be true, everybody has there own point of view about Apple and there computers like you Unbeliever, We all here to have fun and learn more about Apple Computers and I'm still learning, I only been using Apple for 6 months, I always been a Window user for the past 10 yrs and I still use Window's and I plan to buy a PowerMac G5 Quad for Christmas. I Just simply want to ask What's the difference between Dell's 3.6 intel and Apple 3.6 Intel, maybe it's a stupid question but who care's if it is.
