[help] Modding Firefox buttons

Over the years there's been a whole bunch of Safari themes for Firefox. Some were good, some bad, but majority of them had some drawbacks. For examople, there's the ever present problem for us non-WB users, the visual style/Safari skin clash and although i know there's nothing a skin can do, it's still a bit annoying. Recently i tried Safire, and though an extraordinary theme, i found the theme/skin clash and several other smaller bugs too annoying and over the course of few month when i used a non-moded FF i got to like how Tiger VS by KoL made it look. Except for one thing. The buttons.

I want to mod the next/prev, reload, stop and bookmarks button to Safari ones and i don't want to fully theme Firefox in oder to do it. Is there any way to replace them individualy or is there a theme that changes nothing but the buttons so they look like the Safari (or even better Finder) ones?

Any help would be apreciated.

Make two copies of the original .jar file. Extract one to its own folder with winrar, and do nothing to the other. Now you should have a example.jar and example (folder).

Go into the folder, and then go into the browser subfolder (folder/browser). You will see the buttons arranged as .png's here. Open them in photoshop, and place your modded buttons over the existing .png's, much as though you were replacing styler buttons. Most firefox button .png's have 4 states, and you're replacements must be spaced extremely accurately. Photoshop has a grid feature that is invaluable in placing them precisely. Now, save over the original file.

Now, copy your newly-done buttons by right-clicking on the file and selecting copy, and hold down control to copy multiple .png's onto the clipboard.

Double-click on example.jar, and it should open in winrar, but will not be extracted. Single-click on browser folder in the tree view on the right. Now, go to the file menu in winrar, and click paste from clipboard. Close winrar.

There, all done. If you've modded a theme that you've already installed in firefox, you'll have to uninstall it and the re-install with the new version, as you cannot rename the theme without editing the .css.

I know other people will respond, and say it's easier just to unpack and then repack the theme, but I have frequently encountered problems repacking firefox themes, so I don't use this method. Sorry if the instructions seem a little patronizing in places, but I thought it was better to make them very clear in case in the future other people refer to this thread looking to do the same thing.

Hmmm...is there any way to edit the Default theme? I'm not quite sure, but is the default theme just a .jar file itself?

Rather than edit the jar file, you can simply put your overrides into the userChrome.css file that'll be inside your profile... chrome directory. If you've never used it before, it'll be named userChrome-example.css

Just put your relevant images in that directory and access them like you would normally.
