Aqua-Soft ForumsBasically after a while while playing a game the card shuts down as the screen turns off due to no signal output from the card. Its not a temperature problem. I have the problem running all types of games (high end and low end) it freezes quite a lot. I have up to date drivers. When i turn on my pc it says that windows recovered from an unknown driver error. Anyone can help? Ive been trying to play Black and White 2 properly. Im going to return this graphics card for an hsi ati radeon x800x 256mb.

Hiya, not sure what to suggest to be honest. I know in the past when I had problems like you are having the 'unknown driver error' used to definately say it was down to something to do with nvidia drivers so perhaps what you are getting is to do with another piece of hardware. (I know I have had problems with my old soundblaster live card in the past with drivers which caused no end of problems for me)
I have not heard of the 256Mb version of the XFX card, I run the XFX 128Mb 6600GT AGP card in my box and have not ran into problems with it as yet (played black and white two for a number of hours on it also whith no problems). Maybe run a stress test on your machine, that might show where its failing? (how do you know its not a temparature problem out of interest?) - it might be worth doing some web searching on your motherboard, see if anyone else experiences problems like you are having? (perhaps cooling on your north/southbridges may help?)

There is a 256mb version of the xfx version also um what resolution are you runnning it at and what dirvers are you using. Um also i checked the temperature by pausing the game and going to nvidia properties and there there is a temperature gauge....

I run most games (where i can) at 1280x1024 which is the resolution of my flat panel. If the graphics card processor is running at 'normal' temperature and you are getting game problems and lockups it sounds more like something else could be either overheating and causing the problems you are having or alternativly it could be a software conflict kicking in somewhere.
Silly question, but do these lockups seem to happen at a fairly regular time in the more modern system demanding games? I am thinking that perhaps software such as virus checkers checking for updates or any other software which automatically checks for updates (MS antispyware did this to me on my laptop) - older games would be fine on a modern machine as there isnt as much hardware demand so at Virus update wouldnt effect things too much, where as modern games can hammer every single part of your system.
Check your CPU temperatures out if your motherboard has any sensors for things like that. I guess isnce you know what yor gfx card is you aint too much of a **** with systems, oh and perhaps one other thing to check is for dust on the processor cooling fan/heatsink - that can be a real cooling killer! (I clean mine about 4 times a year purely because of dust!)
(oh, out of interest nvidia is reporting my card is running at 73DegC and thats with no games running on the box, just windows)
See how you get on in the end, perhaps run a CPU stress tester to see if that causes any problems - infact - next time you have this freeze problem check your bios and see if it reports the CPU temperature to you - maybe that might give some clues somewehere for you?
obviously before you strip your machine down again, remove any software from your machines startup that isnt really really needed to test if its that conflicting?

make sure you have a power supply that is sufficient as well and reliable... i think the minimum for these higher end systems now is 350W and should be a clean line... don't skimp on your supply, try Antec
i have a 400 watt power supply and um the temp of my graphics card when nothing is running is 54 degrees C....im gonna return this graphics card now as i know that it isn't good enough to support most high end games....also theres a problem with the 6600gt drivers that according my sources pops up in other systems with nvidia cards (except for the better higher end graphics cards from nvidia)....im going to switch to the HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X800 XL ICEQII TURBO 256MB (AGP) graphics card now hopefully. It has more 16 pipelines and runs at 256bit as opposed to 128bit and 8 pixel pipelines
btw i am running high end games but i would have expected a mid range nvidia gt version to be able to stomach games like that....oh well theres always ati with their better value for money agp cards
btw this card plays doom3 brilliantly on highest settings but is a bit jumpy at times

still seems strange to me that you are getting these lockup problems. I know I have not had anything happen with the 6600GT I got (also XFX, but the 128meg version)..
From what I have read, you are probably making a good change - the X800's are faster for most things now than the 6600GT, and cheaper too! 
(oh, I only run a 350W psu on my box and thats running.. ermm... 2xoptical drivers, 4 hard disks, soundblaster live, tv card, wireless NIC, 5port USB2 card, 6600GT, 1.25Gb ram on a AMD 2700XP CPU - although it isnt a lightwieght cheapie PSSU, its a solid chieftec unit)
Let me know how you get on with it, I used to own a HIS Excaliber 9800Pro ICE-Q and I couldnt fault it while I owned it (the TV out on ATi cards is so much better than Nvidias in my experience!)
Its a problem with my power pack man. Q-tec power packs don't offer enough power to high powered graphics cards. If your a gamer steer clear of them. Btw if i can't return this graphics card would you want take it off of myhands for a fair price. It plays half-life 2 great with a better power supply. The card even has a overclocking facility.
