I have an adapter so that I can play my electric guitar through my imac.
Up until recently, the signal has been completely hum free. But now, there is an audible hum sound regardless if my guitar is plugged in or not. This includes the actual jack on the imac being open. Even with nothing in it, it produces a hum.
It's not the speakers, I can mute the sound and the input level bar remains at three notches or so, but my speakers are silent. It's also not any ground or electric currents created by what I have plugged, as it has worked perfectly for a few weeks (and very recently at that) and I haven't changed my setup.
The only time a hum is heard is when I have an application open that uses the analog input signal. The internal microphone does NOT create this hum.
Is it possible that my input jack may be broken or dirty? I usually leave the cable plugged in to avoid it from wearing out, but i did notice that it is somewhat heavy and may have been putting too much force on the jack.
So to sum things up, I have narrowed my problem down to either a jack problem, or some new electrical disturbance outside of my room (i live in a dorm). Any suggestions?
