one of the many drawbacks of the new ipod is that it will only play quicktime files.. you cant import your divx xvid or even mpeg2 files.. im sure linux4ipod will be working hard to make the ipod more friendly for those of us that dont want to spend counless hours converting dvdrips to their propietary format.
You can install 3iVx codec... that way you can read Divx avis in QuickTime... then you can export them to Quicktime Movie (.MOV), and select H.264 as encoder while exporting... 
you'd die if you were to do that to all your videos... making itunes and ipod accept those files is easier then converting them all (yeah right, it's easy to say, i know.)
bottom line is ipod sucks

what the ipod is doing now is nothing innovative, and dont get me started on the iMac and their lame late attempt at media center like atmosphere.
apple is smart company 1 innovative idea per 10 years but make such a buzz that, people will eventually fall for the lie.

i like apple as a company and the products they release (not all the time just another company in it for the money with the image that it truly cares about the customers) but it amazes me how many secuirty guards apple have working for them for free.
i hope somebody finds a crack so that all types of video formats can be played on the ipod for those of you that love the ipod more then life itself.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but you're wrong. Your statement isn't self-explanatory. Well, to be exact, it's not a statement at all. Statement consists of valid arguments followed by facts. What are you trying to say is an opinion. Opinions usually are expressions of one's taste and as we all know — de gustibus non disputandum est. If you don't like iPods that's fine, but remember that you might hurt some people with such harsh words.

But, back on-topic, it's a shame the Minis don't have color screens, or iPodLinux could work their magic on my iPod. That is, once iPL supports the newer iPod chipsets.

I have to say, at first I thought "holy crap. this ipod is great" but then I read that it's basically just quicktime files and itunes stuff and I have no desire to just watch two TV shows on my iPod. I want my Seinfeld episodes and my DVDs ripped onto it.
Oh, and how about finally creating an ipod to car utility first, apple? that's more important to me than anything else because even though i love my 4G iPod, i'm not buying any other iPod for a LOONG time. i bought it to play music and it does just that. so go back and focus on music, and give us car go-ers a way to play our ipods in a car without friggin iTrips. oh, and give us gapless playback. that would be nicer than video.
TONS of korean players do video. they have those fecking tiny ipod shuffles that do video and big clunky walkmans

i don't believe there's an ipod shuffle-sized personal video player. and if there were, what would be the point (small screen etc)?

I open the divx file after installing 3ivx by quicktime
and then I export it by quicktime? if so,do I need quicktime pro?

Yeh.. You do need QuickTime Pro for that.
The technique which I mentioned is bit clunky and time consuming, not to mention bit of irritating that is. Now I'm searching for apps which let me convert my Avi-to-MOV in batch processing. that would be awesome, since I got hell lot of Music Videos in AVI and I would really like them to be organized in my iTunes. ANy suggessions folks?
See if there's any way to get Bink & Smacker (RadVideo) to do that for you.

P.S: It's a good conversion tool, but it doesn't seem to convert from avi to mov files right off the back. Perhaps there's a workaround, or another codec? That's the only freeware I know of--a Google search gives you a ton of shareware programs.

They do it like that as then people who wan't to buy the "latest" will go out and buy it.
Smart marketing if you ask me, they release each model with one extra feature, with most products people would wait for something significant to change, but the way Apple market makes you want to have the newest and "coolest" product.
