Good idea for a Mountable Icon

i was thinkin somebody who can program, could make a program that you could auto run from a removable drive that would act like one of those microsoft gadgets (like an avedesk widget without the need for avedeks, or kapsules or samurize etc) putting a custom icon (png of any size) on the desktop that would have cool options on it specific for removable drives, animations and such and recognize what letter it loaded off of so when disconnected it would disappear. So instead of making your computer try to recognize removable drives, the removable drive would be customized so it would work like that on any PC.

anyone else think this would be a cool idea, or anyone up to the task, i cant program worth didly stink or id give it a shot myself.

Errm, doesn't avedesk do this..

He's suggesting that when you plug in a USB Drive or removable disc device that an icon linking to this apears on the desktop. Then when its removed from its usb port, the icon on the desktop disapears.

Yes, but he's suggesting that the widget to do this runs from the drive itself when it is plugged in. seems a little needless to me when it can just be run with something like avedesk.

I see, however if you set the icon to match your current desktop, then take it to another computer which is completely un-styled (such a word) then it'll just be a mismatch and look horrible! We can't have that now can we.

i just want something that works independently of avedesk (i cant get avedesk to mount anything, it always crashes when i use the mounting desklets), a small program that would mount a png icon on the desktop when the windows PC auto-ran the .ini file (like on auto running cd's) so when i plugged my usb drive into any PC, it would mount the same icon on any desktop.

i was thinkin more on the lines of making something that was specific with the usb drive itself. When inserted, the picture of the jumpdrive would pop up on the desktop and have a custom right click menu to access things like portable versions of firefox or other such programs that most people dont have. (i have to jump from computer to computer and would like a bit of mine to come with me ya know)

CDi2: i very rarely run my usb drive on my box at home, i dont need the programs saved to my jumpdrive on my own pc, theyre already installed, this would be more for people who are forced to use beige boxes at work and such where you cant install nice stuff, so at least there would be one non-ugly thing on my desktop that could run good programs right from the usb drive. kind of a widget on the go, ya know?
