Shell Folders

I was wondering why I can't change the icon of "Programs Files" and "WINDOWS" folder while they don't appear in:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Shell folders]

Any idea?

By the way, I don't want to use extra stuff...

I think that you prob is that Windows and Program files both folders don't have "Personalize..." menu on right click, true ??

If yes, try this:

1. Create a desktop.ini (or open existing) in the folder that you want to change.

2. Put at the top (before all others lines) :

[.ShellClassInfo]

IconFile= C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll

IconIndex=3

3. Save all and refresh with F5.

Note: IconIndex property must be 0 (zero) if you use a single .ico file, otherwise the icon index in the icon library that you want to use.

Another way:

If "manual hacking" isn't your food, simply right click on a standard folder (ex. c:\temp), choose "Personalize..." and "Chage icon". Here select you .ico or icon library you want and confirm all.

Then find the desktop.ini was created (turn on hidden files visibility if you don't see anyone) in this folder, copy or cut it and paste in you desired folder.

Thats all

I hope I've halped you. :D

(Sorry fo english) :P

True :D Forgive my ignorance but I can't see any desktop.ini for each folder. I have "Show hidden files" turned on though...

Looking forward to try this.

mmmmh... strange.

If you try the second way, don't you see any desktop.ini too?? :blink:

No luck so far ThePowderRanger...

#29842

are you using XP right? have you unchecked too the option for hiding protected files & folders in the folder properties dialog?

#29844

Lol, how can I be so freaking ****ie? Thanks a lot ieub. I check/uncheck and modify so much stuff every that I lost the perspective...

And thak you to you too ThePowderRanger, it worked :D

-EDIT- And if I wanted to choose an icon that is not in the shell32.dll? I have tried this so far:

[.ShellClassInfo]

IconFile=%SystemRoot%\Icons\X.ico

but it doesn't work :canadian:

I think you forgot IconIndex=0

I have this in an edited desktop.ini:

Example:

[.ShellClassInfo]

IconFile=%SystemRoot%\icons\SNOWE2\Drop Box.ico

IconIndex=0

[.ShellClassInfo.A]

[.ShellClassInfo.W]

Thank you it works with all the folders except for WINDOWS and that¡s the folder I wanna change.

#29888

:(

and if you try to rebuild icon cache or repair icons ?? :blink:

(Some tweak programs do it)

#29896

Rebuilding the icon cache does not work either :( and I replaced the desktop.ini in Xp's recovery console... kinda weird...

i'd like to know how to change the Windows folder icon too :rolleyes:

You can use IconPhile to change practically every folder icon.

http://www.virtualplastic.net/scrow/

I know this is not the same as doing it without any applications but it's just a suggestion.

After launching the program go to "Desktop Icons" from the drop-down menu.

Then click on "My Folders" on the left pane.

Now you need to specify a special folder (the Windows folder) by double clicking on the "Add Folder" icon.

Browse to the folder you want and click ok.

Once you get the folder in the "My Folders" list, you can simply right click it and pick "Change Icon".

Oh I think I just wrote a mini tutorial :)

oh wow. i've been using iconphile for a while now, and i didn't know it could do that! thanks!! i've changed those special folder icons!!! :woot:

but the only thing that annoys me is how after you run it, it puts itself in the startup, so i have to uncheck it in msconfig every time (because you don't need iphile running for the icons to be changed...wasted resources).
