Im On Linux

hi, what Instant Messenger would you recommend to use with linux (with MSN support)? I use Red Hat 8 and have tried Gaim and Al's MSN but my fonts look jagged (same problem I had with browsers).

thanks fissyb, I've downloaded Gaim 0.63 and now it looks perfect, I was using 0.59 (the default one in Red Hat 8). I had to download and install the spell library (libgtkspell) but it runs perfect now :canadian: :canadian:

Did you follow the half-life WINE how-to? Linux geeks love half-life, so they made it part of the Doc. Project. Check the official Half-life linux website. :lol: Basically, you just install WINE (you dont even need windows installed), but compile it yourself. Then you got to tweak a couple of the 3D settings, and your done. I have it right now.

GAIM uses GTK fonts I believe. Have you turned Antialiasing on, and used a good font. I suggest the Bitstream Vera fonts. They are completly free high quality fonts.

I use GAIM, it just seems to work, and since its skinned by GTK2, it matches my GNOME desktop.

Have you searched Freshmeat, theres a thousand multi-client IMs. Jabber is a really popular one, you can try that.

well i use Amsn a basicaly perfect replica of msn but native on linux ... and i use Kopete (it has all in one icq msn blah blah blah) but i use that for icq... i like amsn better for msn support... but thats what i use

UT2003 wasnt ported, it was made for Linux/Windows during development.

Yeah, check out linuxgames.com for more.

Quake, Doom, and Duke Nukem were made open source, so there are native versions of them around. Im currently playing 3D :woot: version of Doom.

When I had linux I used amsn, and it is the same as windows, you wont notice a difference, well except for some graphics, but it is a great port, it is worth the try.

If something has crappy fonts, try building it with the ./configure --enable-xft command. You of course, have to have XFT installed.

just check the INSTALL file included in the tarball. Many programs will have that option, to enable using system fonts. And if your system fonts are antialiased, so will the programs.
