An Interesting New Sport

Instead of racing high performance cars around a ground track, the Rocket Racing League plans to give birth to competitive manned rocket-powered airplane racing within a three-dimensional track reaching into the sky. Initially, the track is planned to extend one mile vertically, two miles down-track and one-half mile in the cross-plane direction. Virtual race tracks displayed to both spectator and pilots governed by a series of GPS designated waypoint a shape the closed circuit track, giving spectators a close-in experience as clusters aircraft compete for the purse under the close-in roar of rocket power.

Later, the race zone is planned to contain a more expansive volume of airspace stretching to sub-orbital altitudes, and may ultimately evolve into a track that extends beyond - a future where the race begins with a fleet of with a sponsor-branded spaceships on a spaceport tarmac in the New Mexico desert, extends through the atmosphere into low earth orbit, circles the Earth one or more times, executes a high-speed re-entry and ultimately returns to the spaceport tarmac under the applause and awe of tens, if not hundreds, of millions of spectators worldwide.

Came across this on AutoBlog, and thought it was interesting seeing as it could have a huge influence on the way we travel in the future. I know it's not anything to do with Aqua, but seeing as the concept is so akin to something found in a computer game, i thought it might be of interest ;) (and i guess we have general discussion for this reason :) ). It's going to be funded by some serious entrepreneurs, all involved originally with the Xprize, if you are aware of that. If you aren't take a look at the site, there's plenty to see.

airplane races used to be very popular in the states in the first half of the 20th century, and one of the reasons they stopped being so is because of poor pilot safety. it would be interesting to see what that would look like with today's safety technologies.
