Nice Find, I will test it out!
testing direct image linking:

edit: someone please post if you can or cannot see the above, and if not, if it works if you drag it to the address bar
it didn't work right away, it worked after i dragged it to the address bar, now it shows up every time.
nice choice by the way.
okay, i guess it doesn't support direct links... but it should be good for putting up downloads, and for people's homepages!
you only get no ads with the standard deal which comes with no ftp function.
that really sucks if i wanted to update my website through frontpage or dreamweaver. >.<
guess the world can't be perfect. still a good find though.
digitalrice is one of the better servers out there the only problem being that it tends to go down more often than i'd like. but it supports, cgi, perl, php4 no ads, ftp and i think remote linking works too.
if you have specific things you are looking for, use this "power search"
www.free-webhosts.com it's on the right hand side, you can select all of the features you want
i found one
220 mb space
FTP
No Ads
but they have to review your application to see if they want to host you
i applied-----they said it will take 4 days
Get Apache and Dyndns, I posted a tutorial here, so search it. Apache hosts a server from your computer, thus you and have hosting space equal to your hard drive space. Dyndns is a free domain providing company, its the best, google it and use it. Use Apache or else..... :goku's job: :goku's job: :goku's job:
i didnt think xp home supported your own hosting, and also, then it's only up when your computer is on
Of course it supports your own hosting. It has no way to prevent it.
Just get Apache for Windows, its really easy to set up a simple website.
If you just want to serve out files though, you might not want to use an FTP server.
But the problem with that is that not everyone has cable connection, and not everyone has unlimited bandwidth..
I have tried, but I cannot get through my firewall ![]()
Why cant you get through your firewall? Just punch a hole to whatever port you bind apache to.
and... i may be wrong, but... isn't HTTP served on port 80? so... shouldn't that be open anyway?

How come my images does not come up or it is broken?
Its probably because you are trying to hotlink those images. Images will ONLY appear if they are called from a URL starting with http://free.hostdepartment.com, such as http://free.hostdepartment.com/yourusername/. If you are trying to fetch images from other URLs, it will not display at all. We are not doing image hosting, we are doing website hosting, please keep that in mind. If you are looking to host your images, please sign up for our premium hosting account.

I think this is the same problem we discussed a month ago about servers, people with computers in a LAN behind a router (or similar) couldn't get to work the server (Apache). Anyone could give a useful solution and I'm still waiting for it >.<
check this: web servers thread
for image hosting, the best is http://lycos.co.uk NOT http://lycos.com
hmm
Are you guys finding it? I've been finding also for it 2 months ago. And all of your links are already tested by me.
