[help] which linux

I'm using linux for a week, i started with Ubuntu+gnome and i'm not realy happy with it. There was no selection of what i would like to have .. everything was instaled by defoult :/

Plus it has some strange bug or smthng:

When i move any window, CPU usage jums to 100%

look at gDeskelt graph

i thought that is because of CPU temp but everything is ok with it, maybe anyone knows how to fix this?

When i play divX and listen to xmms cpu usage is about 50%

Maybe anyone could give some advice on choosing linux distribution, i think i'll try another one

Actually Ubuntu Linux is a pretty good Linux distro. especially if you're new to Linux. If you're having some problems take a look at this http://ubuntuguide.org/

Now if you want to use another distribution, Slackware or Gentoo are pretty good. But Gentoo is rather hard, and is recommended for advanced users. Debian and SuSE are pretty good too.

It's a matter of preference actually, I use Ubuntu and Slackware, and mess with live distros like Slax and Knoppix from time to time

about the window-dragging-cpu-spikes glitch, it's probably because graphic card drivers aren't installed (i.e. you have no hardware accelerated 2d display)

installing ati drivers under linux can be a b!tch sometimes..

Yeah sniper1747 FC 4 is pretty good too, especially for servers. I've got the Fedora Core 4 DVD and its great and LOADED !

Anyways one can always check the distro. list and choose a suitable OS. Or you could go LFS !

i have insteled nVidia drivers. Mayeb it because i use unstable 5.10 ubuntu :/ home there will be no problems with cpu usage in stable version that comes 10 13.

Linux is simply getting better every year. Since my first experiments with a UMSBAD on a P1 100 almost 10 years ago, usability and maintainability have constantly evolved. If I wouldn't need it at work, I'd made the switch already.

May favorite distro is Debian, upon which Ubuntu is built, btw. As soon as you are firm in the saddle with the shell etc, I'd recommend it. If you really need the latest Gnome & gadgetery, stick with Ubuntu. Suse has cost me too many nerves: Upgrading from 7.0 to 7.1 worked, to 7.2 was kaputt, and to 8.0 and to 9.0... however with debian, a simple apt-get distupgrade got me safely from potato to woody to sarge. Didn't test Red Hat and was annoyed at french localization errors coming out of a german install of Mandrake.

If you're looking for customizability and want to learn a little bit about linux on the way, go with Gentoo.

It can be a bit daunting at first, as you basically set up your linux environment from a fairly low level, but it has fantastic technical support and HOWTOs to help you out. I knew absolutely nothing about linux and had almost no trouble installing gentoo.

Gentoo's portage system is also very handy and makes adding or removing software from an existing gentoo system very easy.

Now, be warned, almost everything in Gentoo is compiled from source, so unless you're fairly patient (like me), I'd have at least a 1.5 ghz computer w/ 512/1024 mb ram and comparable hardware to back them up. I have a 1.2 ghz t-bird runnig at 900 mhz w/ not much else and it took me about 23 hours to compile gnome....of course, you can always install from a preconfigured file, but that gives you less options

I would also suggest you give Fedora Core 4 a try. I started my Linux experience 2 months ago with FC4 and I haven't had any problems with it, even on my crappy laptop (P3 1Ghz, 256MB RAM), it runs without lagging or anything. I think this is really a good distro for beginners like myself, everything is bundled into the installer CD/DVD (I downloaded the DVD image from RedHat website)

The only complain I have is that FC doesn't support mp3 playing by default, if you're to use the bundle mp3 player (which is really similar to itunes) you must patch it (which isn't hard either, just time consuming), if you don't wanna mess with it, you can install xmms (like winamp) for mp3. Oh and one more thing, setting up wireless networking is a pain too (I have a wifi pcmcia)

Other than that, it's a great OS

KDE is so much better than Gnome it's not even funny, in my opinion. I don't like Gnome's interface, too much wasted space. The top bar is totally unnecessary.

Do a local installation of Knoppix, or else get Kubuntu.

SuSE is horrid.

Hmm, any one have any experiance with DSL (Damn Small Linux)?

It is small and can run and really bad laptops. It allows its self to run inside Windows and the file is less than 50 megabytes. A linux smaller than Microsoft Word.

I cound't figure it out, but have heard good things.

Ubuntu 5.10 here. Been using ubuntu since it's conception and it's really be a great package. Beleive it or not but I am running a hefty rig + SLi Video configuration and even though the current 7676 nvidia driver doesn't support Sli, I didn't have to configure a thing. Breezy detected everything and set me right up. I loaded the latest nVidia driver and was done.

I have tried out many LinuxLive CDs on my pc and I must say that my favorite of all of them is probably knoppix... its simple and easy. you should try it out

If you want an easy, functional, and complete Linux desktop, get Ubuntu.

If you don't like the Gnome desktop (some don't... being an Aqua site I think you will) and want something slightly more Windows-y, gut Kubuntu. Same base, just a different window manager.
