So, HELP is needed, here's the thing:

What are these MSNMSGR.exe and MSMSGS.exe progs at taskmanager,.. both are huge memoryeaters, and they aren't Windows nor MSN Messengers because I've uninstalled the Windows messenger and I'm not using MSN messenger at the time... A friend says they have to be messenger progs, but how's that possible? (If they are not in use or even installed) ... Guys, my iTosh is tilting cause of these ...

I've unchecked from the registry the msmsgs.exe that it will not startup at system start.

MSNMSGR.exe is MSN Messenger . When you quit msnmessenger it stays resident unless you exit it from the taskbar icon .

MSMSGS.exe is Windows Messenger . It might reinstal itself unless you uninstall it with http://www.xp-antispy.org/

They can be virus, but most likely legit if you have done antivirus and spyware scans that both came up clean. If you haven't scanned with an antivirus and with an antispyware app, do that first!!

msmsgs.exe is part of Microsoft's Windows Messenger, which is *DIFFERENT* from MSN Messenger. It is VERY difficult to uninstall Windows Messenger because it's integrated with a number of Microsoft products including Outlook.

MSN Messenger could still be loaded in the background even though you're "not using MSN messenger at the time" -- that would be why it's loading as a service.

Wrong service you're thinking of Photo678.

Windows Messenger is the POS generic MSN type chat client.

You're confusing it with the "Messenger" service, which runs under the process "C:WINDOWSSystem32svchost.exe -k netsvcs"

Bzzz... wrong. It is EXTREMELY easy to uninstall Windows Messenger. It's not truly integrated into Outlook. Outlook hooks into it and starts Windows Messenger, but will easily function without it.

If you want to disable the Messenger Service do the following:

1) Start -> Run

2) Type "services.msc" with no quotes

3) Find the service named "Messenger" in the list and double click it.

4) If it is started click "Stop" and wait for it to finish. Then set the Startup type: to Disabled

If you would like to actually delete the Messenger service, you can do so with HijackThis.

1) Open HiJackThis

2) Select "Open the Misc Tools section"

3) Select "Delete an NT servce..."

4) Type "Messenger" without the quotes and hit OK.

If MSN Messenger is installed, you can easily remove it from Add/Remove Programs. If you need MSN Messenger and keep it installed, whenever you go to your Hotmail account, MSN Messenger will startup in the tray, but not sign you in. It will stay there even once you are done in Hotmail. The only way to exit it is if you right-click the icon in the tray and choose Exit or kill the msnmsgr.exe process in Task Manager.

I don't know what AntiVirus software you are running, but there is a known issue with Norton AntiVirus 2004 (don't know about 2005 or 2006) that always keeps msmgs.exe running. To fix this:

1) Open Norton AntiVirus

2) Go to "Options"

3) On the left click "Instant Messenger"

4) Uncheck the box for "MSN Messenger" (it says MSN Messenger but it applies to msmsgs.exe)

5) Also make sure to disable the Messenger service as noted above.

Or you can just go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesMessenger" and delete the registry entry. Make a backup of the key first of course.
