Linux Media Player

Apart from games, the one thing i miss from windows is windows media player.

Is there a similar program for *nix, with a media library and skinning function?

I've spent hours searching only to find dead links to "xtunes"

vlc doesn't have a media library does it?

anyway, i've got Zinf now, which does :)

All these players are just frontends for other codecs, so it doesnt matter that much which one you pick, unless theres some exotic feature you want.

Right now im using: gxine for video and ogle for DVDs.

EDIT- I just tried VLC. Man that is THE best player!! Its the best Ogle frontend ive seen, though I did have to recompile the dvdlibs to work w/ it. :D

i sooo agree with taha and contrasutra, VLC is the best! i have some movies that would only like to play in quicktime or WMP and depended on if i was on my PC or my mac. but VLC just plays it all. it does seem kinda jumpy playing .WMV and/or .ASF (if people just DIDNT encode in those formats, we would be fine)

well well whaddaya know

I haven't even TRIED VLC on Linux, and it turns out I was right :rule:

I've actually tried it on OS X, and its as beautiful as it is useful.

You guys might also wanna try MPlayer. Again, I've tried it on OS X :P, but I believe there should be a Linux version too...

Edit: By mplayer, I don't mean Windows Media Player. On OS X, its called MPlayer OSX..

Yeah, Mplayer WAS a linux program that they ported to OS X, jeez you OSX people are so stuck up, you think VLC and mplayer are OSX apps.

mplayer sucks, it takes forever to compile, and always has errors. Ive never compiled it right, and I dont know why.

VLC looks good in Linux. Its GTK+, so it keeps your system theme (which is galaxy for me)

well, I dunno about MPlayer on Linux, but on OS X, it rules!!!

oh, and its nt ugly, its a Cocoa app, and its really beautiful. Its brushed steel B)

Plus, it supports 101% of all media types. It even plays some files WMP can't!!

Well, Cocoa is much better than GTK+ , not GTK2, but theres like no apps that use that yet (i dont know why).

You mac people get all the pretty apps. Im not upsessed w/ looks, but something other than GNOME looking nice would be cool.

#29183

grrr lets get apple to port all that mac os X aqua interface crap to linux.. lol!

okay that would just be cool or what?
