well.. there isnt really a specific emulator ( imnow there is Uwin or those other ported unix apps) but your best bet is to go with a virtual machine.. emul;ating a whole otehr computer in a computer
try virtual pc the trial... www.connectix.com and you can set up a linux thing and it will instal from the linux mandrake cd into a image file on your harddrive.. so you can run mandrake while in xp... but it is extreamly extreamly slow since it is emulating everything

VMware is the best out there. It will emulate Linux distros great, the only problem is the price.

Why not dual boot?
Well because :
1. i am a ****ie in linux world and i first want to test it and after that to iinstall it permanently
2. because i have to move my crap from a partition and after that to delete it....
i've been running Redhat 9 in VMWare..
and i've got to say..
that it runs ALLOT faster, when installed on a harddisk, and run from boot..
if you end up liking Linux.. diffineatly install in in a Dual-Boot..
also.. since your running XP.. you may want to check out this page
Only RedHat needs those modules, EVERY other distro comes with them preinstalled. 
Redhats also the only distro that doesnt have MP3 support built in. 
Mandrake 9.1 can resize NTFS partitions, so you wouldnt have to move anything.
If you dont want to install it just yet, try KNOPPIX. It runs entirely off a CD. (Y)

Haa.. I was having the EXACT same problem about a month ago, as most A-S members can recall 
The best thing to do (or at least what I did 
) is to first try it on VPC, if you like it, install it with dual boot.
Mandrake 9.1 is AMAZING!! I'm loving it.. 
hey, if anybody out there knows something about Knoppix, please help me with this...
i've downloaded and burned Knoppix 3.2. It goes fine until the 'boot' screen, at which point i hit enter or type 'knoppix'... neither works. it just goes to a black screen and doesn't load. does anybody know why?

If it doesnt work, your probobly out of luck.
Press F2 and look for the option that disables most hardware detection, that might get it to work.
i always heard vmware was the best out there for emulation on a xp machine. like others are saying that 9.1 can now resize ntfs.... might just have to slap that on my new HDD soon 
How good are you with the command line?
Because Mandrake is just using a free open source tool to resize the partitions, so if you dont mind a little complicated CLI interface, you can resize it w/o getting Mandrake.
I recommed mandrake though, because it gives you a nice GUI.
