[request] Files from an iPod Shuffle

After reading a couple of pages at Apple's site, I noticed there are some nice features on the iPod Shuffle that aren't available on a normal iPod. The thing I'm mostly interested in is convrting tracks to 128kbps AAC when moving to the iPod.

I want to try making iTunes think I have a Shuffle, but I probably need the hidden files from a real Shuffle. If someone could clear their iPod Shuffle from songs, zip the all the folders (including hidden ones) on it's drive and send it to me, it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks to dreadnaut, I tried it and it seems that iTunes actually checks what model of iPod is connected, not only files.

Now I would like to change that hardware check, but I don't understand what are the device & vendor ID's of the iPod.

there are 2 entries in the device manager - one for the iPod's drive and one for the iPod itself, and both don't show DEV_xxxx and VEN_xxxx. are there device ID's for USB/FireWire devices or is it only a PCI thing? If it's only for PCI, what would be a common way to identify a USB/FireWire device?

If you are only interested in Converting Tracks to AAC 128kbps, you can simply convert them using iTunes. In preferences, under Importing tab.. you can set AAC encoder instead of Mp3 encoder. Then simply right click on the song and convert it to AAC.

I knew that. but that would create duplicate files in the library and would be quite impossible to manage manually when you have over 3500 songs.

i'd just use a different ipod synchronizer if i were you. i think foobar2000 has an ipod plugin that lets you convert all your files before copying them to you ipod.

by the way, every time you convert from one compressed format to another (gif to jpeg, mp3 to aac), you only lose quality.

I won't give iTunes up for some space on my iPod

and I know it reduces the quality, but I listen to my iPod mostly when I'm on a bus so I won't hear the difference.

umm.. please correct me if I'm wrong, but you want to convert your Mp3s to AAC so that you can put more songs on your iPod !!...

so if I'm not wrong, how exactly you want to put them on iPod without adding them to your library first?

Another thing I can think you are trying to do is, convering them on-the-fly while putting on iPod, right??, but if you fool your iTunes thinking that connected iPod is iPod shuffle.. won't it fumble while updating playlists? cause Shuffle doesn't have playlist support if I'm not wrong.

Basically, I'm really curious... how you are planning to pull this off !! it's really interesting experiment in my opinion.

I've already thought about this, I don't mind losing the ability to use playlists, I never use them anyway.

and yes I want to convert them on the fly, like I could do with a Shuffle.

I really doubt that a file would give away the type of iPod attached.

My guess would be some kind of half-duplex protocol that runs on top of TCP/IP. (Run from iPodService.exe)

If you have a firewire iPod, you could record it with a network sniffer. No idea about USB, though.

I doubt it works through TCP/IP, I've always disabled the FireWire LAN connection and it doesn't affect the iPod.

I think it's detected like Windows detects devices, but I'm not sure how it's done with external devices.
