Tried everything but i just can`t export playlists from my iPod the way i can from my library (via the "Export song list" option).
I have a bunch of OtG playlists that i made and i`d like to back them up and listen on my desktop.
I want to backup just playlists not the music files.
iTunes 4.9
iPod 3G 15giger
Also tried Anapod Explorer which is the biggest piece of **** i ever used. Trial version doesn`t do anything.
Any alternatives?
Um, it should do it automatically via iTunes. Make sure the update all songs/playlists option is on. I regularly had my one the go playlists from my ipod (both 20gb , and even 3g), transfer over to iTunes. All I can suggest is to make sure you have the lastest ipod firmware.

i use winamp with the ipod plugin, and with that, i just drag and drop the ipod playlist to the winamp playlist section.
Set your iPod preferences to "Manually Update Playlist" in iTunes... that way you will be able to see the playlists on your iPod, and maybe then you can export the playlist. My iPod is with my friend right now, else I would have tried and told you if it works... I believe this should do the trick
I don`t have a problem with syncing playlists.
I made some On-the-Go playlists on my iPod that i want to save/export. I don`t want to use Auto Update plus i`m pretty sure it won`t copy playlists from my iPod to iTunes.
Also i DO see playlists on my iPod, i just can`t export them like i can export playlists in iTunes. When i want to export a playlist from iPod, the option is greyed out.
I`ll try wookie's trick and let you guys know

EDIT: I tried the WinAmp plug-in and even though it's not very elegant and has a quirk or two, it does the job (barely 
)
I also found that trial verion of Anapod, even though it poped up a window saying i can`t export playlists with trial version did exactly what i needed. Screw you Anapod!

I want to backup playlists i created On-the-Go, not the files they contain.
Oh! Sorry. Thought you were looking to export your songs to your iTunes on your desktop. My bad. I looked for this on www.versiontracker.com though; if you haven't already try doing asearch there.
I'll see what I can do, I have an algorithm for searching the library path from an iPod track. it's probably possible to do a small program that will do this. but school has just started so it might take me some time.
You know what... when I had my 3G (it was too 15 Gig) iPod... if I had made OTG playlist in it, it use to create a playlist called "On-The-Go 1" in my iTunes whenever I use to sync. It doesn't make sense, but I had had selected "Update Selected Playlists" option in my iTunes/iPod pref. I believe it should do the same to yours since it's the same model.

The thing is that i don`t want to auto sync them with my comp.
I`m still in the process of re-building my tags and adding album covers so iTunes doesn`t hold all of my music.

Sorry to bump my own thread but has anyone found any other way to get On the Go playlists from iPod?
The trick i used last time didn't work now so i can't save the playlists i made on my iPod and i need to re-install the firmware soon.
I'm sorry I haven't worked on this yet. I didn't except iTunes 5 to be out so soon after I said I'll try to make it, now I have some other work, to get Multi-Plugin fully stable.

Unbe... while i realize you are not looking to copy the actual songs over, i think i remember seeing the playlist information copied with copyPod... i used that program once, over a year ago, however for some reason that sticks out in my memory... may want to check it out...

Thanks for the tip but all "copy from iPod" type apps i tried so far (including copyPod) only copy files, not just playlists.
I know this thread is wayyy old, but I wanted to add to it for anyone having the same trouble trying to export playlists from their iPod, in the hopes that it can save 'em some time.
I was in the same spot as the original poster - wanted to get custom made playlists off of my iPod and back onto my computer, and I was getting a major headache over it.
After A LOT of research and digging I came across a free program called Sharepod (http://www.sturm.net.nz/website.php?Sectio...s&Page=SharePod) that did what I needed.
It's actually an .exe file (plus a few dll files) that you drop directly onto your iPod via My Computer. Check out the site to get more details on that process as well as how to use it.
Once 'installed' run the program - you'll see a list of songs and playlists that're on your iPod. Right-click on a playlist you want to export and choose 'save as Winamp playlist' and save it on your computer somewhere. It saves an M3U file that you can then import into iTunes. As long as the songs are in your iTunes library the playlist will be able to reference them and play them. (and if they aren't, Sharepod allows you to get your songs off of your iPod and on to your PC as well).
Anyway, hope that helps someone down the road.
