[HELP] Installing windows on external hard disk

Hi ,

I recently bought an external hard disk the other day(USB 2.0). It is 15GB. I partitioned it into 2 drives.

One to install windows on and the other to store my data. The one for the OS is 5GB and the one for the data is 10GB. Now I inserted my windows XP CD into the drive and started the installation and chose that i choose to select in which drive i would install it in... and also i chose 'Fresh Copy' and not upgrade.

It went well ... and then it restarted like it usually does... and then this blue screen came telling me that it could not fine the specified drive. It was odd as it was plugged in already...

Anyone have any experience or know a site where it teaches you how to install windows on an External Harddisk... Pls help me

Thank You for your time...

If you are trying to boot off an external USB or Firewire drive. then you are missing one big thing: Drivers. To use most external devices Windows needs drivers installed to use the device. If you trying to boot off the external disk, that means Windows has to load the drivers it needs to use the drive off the very drive you are trying to boot off. Thus no boot. It is kind of like looking for directions to open something but those instructions are inside of what you need to open.

Xinh is right, you have to go to the page of the hard disk's manufactor and dowload some drivers, also make sure your mother board supports it (boot from removable media) that's what my says AND pay attention on the WinXp installation screen, right on the beginning of the process I think you have to "press F6 to set up raid or to install a third party driver" something like that...

I hope you get your problem solved bro, good luck ;)

I have an idea, make one of those custom XP cds, and include the drivers for your HD on it,

then try and install it :)

What you guys are like trying to tell me is that the installation is using the motherboard to try and access the harddisk right? And since its on USB... its not 'DIRECTLY' associated with the motherboard and so the installation fails? So it needs it's own driver so that it runs in DOS right? If so then is it possible to use the CD that came with the harddisk?

If so... any1 know how to fix this in detail ? pls tell me...

Thanx alot for the current replies :)
