It is possible to run MacOS X within the Linux environment, using a free program called Mac-on-Linux. Both Mac OS 10.1 and 10.2 are supported. MacOnLinux.net

I was gonna get an iBook (800, 640mb, 12", 20gb), and i'll install Linux on it just for this =D

You can't run Mac-On-Linux on an Intel Box it must be a Power PC Computer. However you can run Darwin (The Core of Os X) On an Intel Box but I warn you It SUCKS!!!... Keep in mind that the Apple computers have RISC Processors so Darwin on an Intel Box Runs Stupid Slow.
this is pretty cool, although it isnt an emulator.. it actually does a boot process for the Mac OS on the harddrive of the mac so with this you can expect pretty close to native speeds. it be great to have an intel emulator though... hehe

Please excuse my ignorance, but... isn't PPC able to run OS X natively?
Iceman, not really, Apple uses PowerPC processors thats true but their hardware is propietary, I do not know if you know Amiga computers, they also use PowerPC but I am sure you wouldn't be able to boot OSX on them 
PowerPC is a type of proccesor that use RISC architecture, it is easy to built a PowerPC base computer for half the price you would pay for a Mac and have it run linux and OSX on top, or check the link that I posted in the general board about building a G4 able to run OSX native without paying Apple prices.

Are you speaking of chaning your PC to PPC hardware.. or making windows look like Mac os x?
Soulless to beging.. a new motherboard and processor. Be aware tho that Windows doesn't run in PowerPC you may have to go windows all the way, or you can go OSX all the way if you follow the hardware spec listed in the post that I made in the general section of the board,Building your own G4

hey, i was checking out the MOL site, and they say it supports 10.1, 10.2 (including 10.2.4)......has anyone tried 10.3 on it? or even anything past 10.2.4? just wondering.....might be trying the linuxPPC thing soon

no need to buy an expensive g4 processor. there is a ppc emulator for linux. it only does up to 8.6 but it's getting better. besides go get an emac. they're powerful. get one. cheap too: $799

uhhhh...you kinda missed my question. i have a TiBook (667), i dont need ANOTHER mac. i want to set my tibook up for dual boot (OS X and mandrake linux). there is a program at the site mentioned above that will run in linux (ONLY on the PPC) that will allow you to also run OS X or OS 8/9. i just want to know if it will run 10.3 (because the site mentions 10.1 and 10.2)

oh, but either way, the MOL is only for PPC and it isnt an emulator. it allows for another PPC operating system (Mac OS, OS X, or another PPC emulator) to run concurrently with the PPC linux.
From what Ive heard, its rather slow, but still usable.

yea, its supposed to be native running speed (or did you mean 10.3 is just slow?)
im gonna back up my home directory and apps directory eventually (like during xmas break), and reformat as a dual boot system. ive been meaning to do a fresh install anyway, so if i dont like linux on there as a dual-boot system, ill just wipe the drive again and install only panther.
i got an email back from the team at MOL
MOL can run 10.3 (you should use the BK/rsync version). It probably runsa bit slower than 10.2.x since some of the acceleration stuff does not
kick in due to a link failure (I'll fix this...).

Sure, it's running at native speed, but now you're running TWO operating systems at once, and unless you have a killer system (which you dont), that's going to cause some major slowdown.
I really don't see the point here, if you have a ppc you can dual boot Linux and OS X, why would you want to run OS X in a little window that's much slower if you can run it in real next to Linux.... <_
Maybe you use linux all the time, but every once in a while want to use OSX, so this is easier.
I dont boot into windows, I just VNC into one of my windows machines. I don't feel like rebooting just to use an OS every once in a while.

i would like to "force" myself to learn *nix more because with OS X if i cant figure out how to do it in a terminal, i'll just using the GUI or something more automated and easier. plus, there is a game that my boss got me addicted to (quadra - look for it on sourceforge). so i want to install it under linux on my mac because it doesnt run well in my VPC copy of W2K.
plus, its also one of those "because i can" things
