[Question] Airport Extreme Neub Concerns

Hello Everyone!

For those of you who don't know, i am moving very soon to Milan, Italy where i already have an apartment.

One of the ISP's there have a promotion of having wireless 10mbit internet for pretty much the same price as wired. This is not much of an advantage for me as i have G5, however, my Fiancee has a Toshiba Laptop (yes, i know, windows... When autocad works for mac she will switch ).

The first question at hand is...

I have an Airport Extreme Card installed on my G5 and Her laptop is obviously 802.11g capable. I do not own an Apple base station (and i would like to avoid spending more if possible). The ISP leases included with the monthly payment a wireless router with access point.

Have you guys had experience with such a setup? does it work well? what problems could i expect?

The second question is in terms of wireless range...

If you look at the map of my apartment where do you think would be the best place to locate the Access Point, and how well will the signal spread to the bedroom/living room?

Any advice/insight would be more than appreciated.

Umm, not too sure what you were doing for internet before, but I run a linksys router here and an AE card on my ibook and have no problems connecting. As far as range goes...Im in a two story 4 bedroom house...the router is set up upstairs...and I can get a signal outside/basement, etc....and the router is a b router...with a g router you will be getting a much better distance to speed ratio.

Yes, we were lucky and did good research/apartment search. Before I was simply connecting to the internet through an ADSL Router/Modem and by plain old Ethernet Cabling. This will be my first wireless network.

Im not sure what brand the router will be (its up to fastweb.it) but it relieves me to read you are not using an Apple Base Station

Ditto. I use a Netgear router and an AE card in my powerbook, no problem at all and I can get reception from about twenty feet outside the (brick) walls of the house.

I also use a Linksys router and have an Airport card in my iMac. Works like a dream!

I looked around, but they seem to have several brand of routers, some choices look good (cisco and US robotics) but some look like ermmm... ( Pirelli router? :confused: )

The problem is that in the website they just say "wireless kit". No price difference choices, nothing. I might have to post there :slant:

I'd be more worried about security issues, after all, in principal anything wireless

can be intercepted, I dont know how secure wireless networking is but its a thing

Yeh, use WPA, its much better.

As for where to place it, put it anywhere, if the signal isnt good in a certain area buy another access point and use it as a repeater. You should be fine .
