[Help] Instructions To Install Windows Icons

Hello,

I just completed 4 iconsets for Mac and I want to release them also for Windows. The thing is that I don't know what format for Windows is the most suitable, ICO or ICNS format.

I also need a sort of instruction file for people that use Windows how they should change the icons in Windows. Sorry for the stupid questions but I never used any other computer then a Mac in my whole life:(

Thank you.

If anyone could help me with this and sent me an email: bigjohn@johndoeamsterdam.com

I would appriciate it.

Any other tips are wlcome too.

Windows uses the .ico format :) In sizes from 16x16 up 128x128.

Aw that's so nice of you ;o;. But yes, the format is .ico as Blitz said ^^. However, making instructions is a bit more complicated. There are many diferent programs out there (both free and payware) that people use to change their system icons. Because of this I'd recommend just releasing a file with all of the icons in it, that way people can install them however they like.

And in that case, the only instructions you'd need to give are something like: "You'll need a 3rd party program like Iconpackager or IconX in order to change your system icons."

Thanks,

can anybody get me a instruction for this. It should be a 'monky-proof' instruction.

Is there also a way to change them without any 3th party program?

yep u should do all that manually..

Its better and easy to give them iconpackager file or other , to just change the icons in couple of clicks.

As sakurakira said, release them as icos first, then u can do anything u want or get more help . :)

Let's see.. Windows keeps most of it's icons in a file called shell32.dll. So you will need to either reshack it ( Meaning get a program called ResHacker and manually replace each icon with yours.) Or use a third party program to change them for you.. (i.e Iconpackager) There are programs that can change them for you.. Maybe someone else can name them. Hope that helps :)

As for making them I use photoshop with this plugin :)

I will email you Hein with instructions. Blitz's last post has nothing to do with normal icons usage on Windows.

I`m writing you and email now.

I'm awaiting your mail.

At last people will be able to enjoy your icons ported directly by the artist :)
