Thoughts read through brain scan.

Scientists say they have been able to monitor people's thoughts via scans of their brains.

Teams at University College London and University of California in LA could tell what images people were looking at or what sounds they were listening to.

The US team say their study proves brain scans do relate to brain cell electrical activity.

The UK team say such research might help paralysed people communicate, using a "thought-reading" computer.

This is serously scary news.

I never thought that a thought could be physically traced but it seems they can. It's pretty much the greatest void of privacy ever.

This is very misleading gents

It's detecting brain activity, and using that to figure out if a person is focusing on one thing or another, basically something like red vs. blue.

Similar things have been around for a little bit for stroke patients.

Like I could sit there and be like... "Red... yea, red... no wait, blue!"

I mean, if they were to use this on a prison inmate, to see what they were thinking about doing, or blah blah, couldn't the inmate think of lots of things, even contradict himself?

I dont think thoughts are any better than words. People can lie in their words, I think people can lie in their thoughts...

...but maybe that's just me.

that's true. but that won't really happen much if they don't know if they are reading the inmate's thoughts. he will be always thinking, ok. i should lie, and think up of something else. if you can read their minds, you can tell if they are thinking of lying.

but, all in all, this acomplishment isn't perfect and reliable, and i don't want that to work perfectly anyway. but, this can be only useful if used in crime scene investigations.

But again... "I should lie, I'm gonna think I'm thinking about blue, but I'm really thinking about red... or am I?" and they'll never know. I don't see this as a great advancement. You know how many things people think about at once? You think anyone could keep up and completely understand it? It's just stupid.

I guess Lou has point.... in fact, off course you can lie in your thoughts... I mean, if I know someone is trying to read my mind.. I would definitely focus on things and think about something which can mislead the reader.

hmm.. i think you all missed what they were actually talking about. they can't read your thoughts.. they can just tell which of a couple things they have listed, that you're paying attention to, basicly, reading the brain for the eye position etc, rather than tracking the eyeball itself. it will be good for controling a computer, but thats it. think the Matrix.. your thoughts are your own, but your wishes to "move" are expressed.
