(Link) Vista and Tiger

As Windows Vista Beta 1 released, the word-war started whether Microsoft has copied Apple's Tiger techonologies or not. Some say that Microsoft has copied, they give examples of similarity in icons, presentation system approach, and icon naming, and some say that Microsoft has not copied but improved, they quote the examples of features like virtual folders, network presentation and search as you type.

Eweek has done a comparision of both operating systems and result came out in form of a very detailed and useful article.

When Windows Vista ships in late 2006, Windows will mimic many features of Apple's Tiger and go beyond it. But while Microsoft introduces the world to Vista, Apple is keeping mum about its next version of Mac OS X, which Steve Jobs has said will ship at about the same time as Vista. It is the Intel-ready Leopard, not Tiger, that will be Apple's answer to Windows Vista.

#305453

thank you... thank you

#305469

well this is a world of copying. but i believe by the time Vista is out, Leopard should have better features and once again superior.

btw, how can i download the Vista Beta 1?

thanks

Wait, so Vista is the same as Longhorn...?

Loghorn sounds better...

BTW, M$ Only did copied apple because seeing that they are switching to intel, loads more people will probably use this.

Stupid M$.

Yup and "Vista" replaces "Loghorn"

#305510

Oh for pete's sake. If they're copying good ideas, that's a good thing for us. We're the darn consumers. Stop taking these things personally.

Besides, nobody seems to realize that Beta 1 is for developers and hardware manufacturers. Barely 1/3 of the consumer-related features are implementent yet, those are for Beta 2. Same goes for the look of the UI, this isn't the final one afaik.

#305512

I can see it now... another fanboy fLAME thread.

Who really gives a crap who supposedly copied from who... these CONCEPTS have been around FOREVER.

Long before OS X and XP.

Most of these CONCEPTS and IDEAS were not even thought up by Apple or M$ in the first place.

So Apple IMPLEMENTED some of these ideas first and then M$ chose to do the same. BFD!

All I can say is... it's about frikkin time.

And nobody stole crap from anybody. If an original idea was "stolen" or "copied" as some here suggest, there would have been legal action taken a long time ago. I don't see any of that happening.

Get over it... glad to see M$ FINALY putting stuff in their OS that we have wanted for years.

And for those who insist on asking... if you don't know how to get a copy of Vista, you're an idiot.

It's called an MSDN subscription... PAY FOR IT. If you're lucky, you may even get on an alternate free beta tester list, but I seriously doubt it.

#305565

or go dowload it off limwire or bittorrent (don't do this)

btw. it doesn't matter they have the same. MS IS TOO LATE ALREADY. leopard will be out and will have more pwnage technologies in it and then MS will come out with some buffallo>>summer home operating system that has them but then apple will release the next mac os and it will be more pwn and basically it will be like this forever until someone dies.

how old is bill gates?

#305604

I installed vista on my machine and it looked pretty nice, but I'm still getting used to the GUI so I'm not gonna criticize anything yet.... but I recommend everyone to give it a try

#305608

but at time, find that Apple's launching it's OS at a rate too fast. How can anybody afford to buy when it comes out so often.

Well anyway, at least MS is copying something good.

#305627

let me quote Tim on this one:

"Yada, yada, yada..."

Just keep it clean...

#305686

Yeah if there is one thing I don't like about Apple trying to make money fast is the whole deal about releasing 5 operating systems that all fall under the System 10 operating system.

$100 USD a year is a bit too much.

Microsoft did seem to piss of tons of people by having us wait 5 years to get a new OS. It even took a long time for a service pack.

But IMHO, I think all this X stole from Y or Y stole from Z is stupid.

It's marketing, Apple steals, Microsoft steals, Linux Steals. There is no such thing as an innovation in my view. From my point of view, it seems Apple could really care less if IE7 looks like Safari or Firefox. Leopard is suppoed to ditch Safari right? I thought Apple made an announcement that Firefox would be the defualt?

Well I don't care. Just go on with the thread.

IT's marketing, if they make a spin off it's not to much of a problem but if they copy it, by that I mean 100% the same then yeah, they have a right to do something. From my point of view, it seems Apple could really care less if IE7 looks like Safari or Firefox. Leopard is suppoed to ditch Safari right? That is pure trolling dude. Either that or you have no idea what you're talking about.

First of all, it`s every 12 to 18 months.

Second, it`s a much improved OS, not a SP-like crap.

And where did you get that Safari will be ditched in Leopard? I think your immagination is playing tricks with you.

#305705

I revised it, but you beat me to my edit.

Yeah I reread it thougt, WTF?

And I remember reading something about Firefox becoming the main OS X browser a while back.

I don't remember where it is, but I remember reading it.

#305708

Unbeliever - I'm sorry but I must disagree (hope it's not illegal to disagree with mods). Tiger wasn't that big of an upgrade at all IMHO. As I said, it's a couple of program updates and a bunch of minor fixes, one or two major-ish ones. That's what a Service Pack is, essentially. The only difference is that it's 100$.

Don't get me wrong, OS X is a great OS, but Tiger was a big letdown for me.

#305723

guys just tried MS Vista. Wow Avalon works good. the glass effect looks owesome and the speed is great.

yeah i've seen the similarity of OSX but sorry to tell you its better. copied and better.

my rate: i think Vista bets Tiger even in beta 1.

#305773

i could careless what ms does, as long as its a better OS its fine with me, and just cause there using tabbed browsing doesnt mean there copying, none of you have any idea who was the first idea to do it, firefox was just the first to release it, ms or mac probally had the idea years before firefox :

If you give me an XP SP that delivers instant search, improved kernel and a new framework tech i will gladly install it.

But let's take a look at Vista. It is promised to deliver instant search (Spotlight), improved kernel (NT 6.0) and new frameworks - .NET, Avalon, Indigo (Core Audio, Core Image, Core Video, Core Data). If you take a look at that, by your theory, Vista is nothing more than XP SP3, right?

God you people are stupid.

#305945

We are not flaming here just discussion.

@chepillin XP SP3 eh! i will not agree to that. as you notice MS Windows changed its name everytime it changes the GUI. If you recall Windows 3.1 has updated to 3.11 because gui and cores are the same. Then they changes the name Windows 95 because the gui and cores changes. then to windows 98, 98se, xp. if you notice the changing names. They changed the name every time they changed the gui and upgraded the cores and adds some stuffs. So, in this case i will not agree to you with the name XP SP3. Though Mac OSX never goes to Max OS XI coz they are just updating and adding some good stuffs. it is just equivalent to the sp1 and sp2 of windows.
