[release] Getchoo Public Beta

Hey guys,

Getchoo reproduces the Spotlight application new to Tiger - but for Windows! It is a frontend for the Google Desktop system and hopefully soon for the MSN Search app.

After a week or so of testing with my excellent testing peeps (thanks guys you'll be getting the latest new versions as they come ) - I now have a version I think is suitable for you guys to try out and play with.

Getchoo M3 seems to be a very stable build with all the basic features of a spotlight clone

Fast searching
Simple 'Show All' dialog
Full preferences dialog
Complete keyboard navigation

... and other cool features.

You will need;

-Windows 2000/XP or newer

-Google Desktop Search installed (and finished doing its index process)

While this is a public beta please remember Getchoo is still in the very early stages of development and there are many missing features and possibly many bugs gone unoticed.

Unpack the above, then click Getchoo M3.exe

If you find bugs - and wish to report them, reply in this thread with your PC specs (only basic ones please e.g. OS, RAM and how to reproduce the problem).

To add a shadow to Getchoo: You must have WinFX by Stardock and Add Shadow by Jef. Add Caption=Getchoo to your Add Shadow INI.

BTW - there appears to be a weird bug on the first run of Getchoo that the Show All Dialog will not show. But this appears to be only the first time the app is run, so just restart it and it works fine.

However I experimented a weird bug using it : I ran it for the first time, have the explanation pop-up displayed, clicked OK. Then I tried to display the Search Bar (it worked) and right-clicked on it to access the Preferences. Crash, "the memory cannot be read", end of the game. I started it again, the pop-up was displayed again, same actions, same crash. Then I tried to click on "Quit" instead of "Preferences" : same crash, but now I'm unable to use the soft : the tray icon displays itself, but clicking on it has no effect.

I'm using Windows XP with WB, on a AMD AthlonXP+ with 512MB memory. I hope you can fix this, I'd really like to use your app

Wow that is one weird bug. Has any one else experienced it? Im 100% sure none of my testers got this, are you using an XP mod such as Flyakite?

Ok, fixed byt reseting Getchoo Preferences, as told in your PM. It works perfectly now, even the Preferences dialog, don't know why it didn't worked the first time... (and yes, I'm using Flyakite mod)

Thanks for the app. It's really nice. I'm experiencing a bug, though. After I search for something, when I click on the search result, nothing happened if the result was an email (I use Outlook as my default mail client). However, if I were to click a search result for a pdf or a text file, they will open. Is Outlook the problem? Will emails in other programs like Thunderbird open? Is anyone else experiencing this?

Very ****ing cool as ****, the only things I can think of including in the pref is ability to change icon (if possible to show a pressed and hover state) and change the font displayed

You can 'reset' Getchoo by doing the following - it should fix any weird problems.

Hey man,
Try this to fix your Getchoo problems.

-Open getchoopreferences.dll in notepad (its in the getchoo folder)

It should look something like this:

Copy the above into the file (overwriting the stuff already there) and then start getchoo.

And to the person who said it didnt appear in the corner or something - right click the Getchoo bar > prefs > theme > bar position to change

Just installed Getchoo without a problem, thank you for a nice first public beta release. I know you must already have a roadmap of new features and enhansements but a humble request:

Could you please add "Open Containing Folder" option with the searched file returned selected (highlighted) in explorer?

This feature would make Getchoo immediately usable to me, and I would appreciate it greatly

This may be a bug, or you simply may not have implemented this yet:

When the Show All search window is open and I single click on a result and scroll down using the "down" key, if I scroll past the bottom, the window does not automatically scroll down.

Thanks for all your kind words everyone the beta seems to be going quite well so far apart from some minor glitches. Work on Getchoo is very active at the moment and I am already preparing a load of new features for version M4 - More realistic spotlight searching being the main of these.

This is barely working at the moment but I should have it up to scratch in no time. Getchoo M4 is going to see a radical recode of the way results are displayed and Im going to make it much smarter so the stuff you actually want is found.

And finally, please consider donating. Developing software like this takes hard work/time and money - I do it for free but I wont be able to keep these apps nag/ad/popup etc free forever. Please spare what you can - no amount is too little

Simply amazing! The show all box is great, but doesn't seem to show up to 500 results when I ask it too. Still, as this is just a beta, it's still amazing. Can't wait until M4 comes out!

For some unknown reason lots of the 'saving the preferences' code seems to have broken >. (if I can get it working)

Hey, i found a good trick for this program.

After installing google desktop search, go into your startup programs and kill all the startup values so it doesnt restart with your PC. This will disable the whole google desktop search.

Then go to the programs directory and find the google folder and notice the 3 applications: "GoogleDesktopCrawl" "GoogleDekstopIndex" and "GoogleDesktopOE"

Add new startup keys to your registry (or shortcuts to your startup folder) for those 3 programs and the desktop index will stay active in the background permanently, and allow the desktop search through your browser, but will never show in ICON in your system tray, perfect for having the getchoo icon uninterrupted with an updated index constantly.

Great app by the way.

Question, does anyone know if google desktop search indexes mounted network drives?
