Installing Konfab 2.1 (free) w/o SP1

Hi all,

I just found out that one can install, and use, Konfabulator 2.1 (free) without having Service Pack 1 installed. One will need to dload and install the following update from Microsoft though:

Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773) (637 KB).

I've just installed and tested this patch myself with WinXP Pro, no service pack and Konfabulator 2.1 (free), and it works just fine.

Why on earth would you be running XP without any SP installed?!?

I can think of a couple of five letter words to call anyone who doesn't have SP2 installed by now.

#303459

Absolutely... I mean why on earth you want to run your system unpatched ???

#303487

Maybe they want to see how fast they can catch bugs without service packs. :) I give them 20 mins.

#303518

Well, not that it's anyone's business as to why I run my system without any Service Packs installed, but, I find it runs just fine without them. I have a top notch virus scanner and firewall, I'm protected.

I don't really care how much sys admin/security experience you have, because when it comes to my PC, I run this show, not you. ;)

By the way, I've been running it like this since 2002 and no virii yet. ;)

Yeah... I've got WinXP Pro with no SP, but it has had a bundle of patches for critical bugs and the such. I've never had any problems to date with this arrangement either :P

Bundled from when... 2004?

Go try and hit Windows update with your non SP version of XP...

You won't get very far.

All critical updates released for XP now require at least SP1 be installed.

Very soon, you won't be able to download jack from M$ without SP2.

This includes the manual downloads.

But on the brighter side, if you don't use IE or Outlook Express and have a top notch A/V and Firewall, you'll be fine for a few more months.

Well, I'm sorry Nirodha.. if my comment offended you by any means. I didn't mean to.

It's not that I use windows Firewall or security stuff that came with SP2(in fact I've disabled the whole Security Center **** from services), but SP1 & SP2 had lot of fixes for Hardware issues with original XP (like USB hotfix, SATA support, 48-bit LBA for ATAPI hard-drive bigger than 130GB and so on). Besides like you, yourself said.. to install Konfab without SP1 patched system, you needed to download another patch.. :), now ain't that bit ironic??

Also, like RJohnstone said... Microsoft is making lot of changes in their patch distribution process.. many patches won't be downloadable/installable on systems without SP1/2. For eg. recently Microsoft changes their Windows Update Controls and Windows Installer.

Anyways, Enough said.. my point was, Service Packs their for some reason... off course if it doesn't fit in your book.. like you said, it's none of my business. :D

I have a five-years-old PC with XP without Service Packs. I don't update drivers and other sucha things. There's no point for this machine to do it. I live fine here. No troubles

#334109

Sorry but there's no point in not patching/upgrading the system... frankly I find it stupid, although as Nirodha said, it's his machine.

...why don't you want to take 20 mins of your time to make sure your system is up to date?

#334119

Like some here, mine's System Pack free and runs fine and happy. Why wouldn't I want to update? Because

1. My hard drive is crammed full

2. M$ can't do things right. They make a patch then you have to patch the patch then patch that patch because some hacker could gain access if they had your username and password on the comp. Excuse me? I was going to invite him in for tea and tell him this?

A/V, A/S and firewalls. I'm OK. Some get hacked often, some get ignored. This the way of the WWW I suppose. Besides, a hacker wouldn't care about some comp that isn't locked down tight, because more often than not there's nothing there worth hacking. They're more interested in crashing microsoft.com, even though nothing is there either.:P

It WAS up to date 1.5 years ago. Now every new driver supports my videocard as 'legacy hardware' and most of security isuues are inapplicable to this box. So now I only update my AV and antispy.

You rock on, man!

WHOOOO!

But just flippin update, it's better, belive me. I didn't get SP1 until, like, SP2 was out for a few weeks. then I went searching for some porn and WHAM! That was a dark day indeed... :(

LOL, couldn't say it better myself!
