AveShell Public Beta now available!

After an all-night marathon of finalizing, tweaking, checking, rechecking and cleanup, I'm happy to present to you the Public Beta build of AveShell !

Remember everyone -- this is EXTREME beta stuff. There's bound to be a few nags and maybe some missing details here and there. But I assure you that the shell is fully functional and works pretty well. I have even included some of the Samurize bits, along with a goodie thrown in for you XAML fans..

There also *might* be an issue with a couple of things that are bundled with it. If it's a problem, PLEASE let me know and I'll get to removing it. I don't want to step on any toes. My email address is quite available for anyone who may need to get in touch with me. I'm pretty sure that everything is kosher...but if not, let me know. :)

Anyway. It's VITAL that you read the readme file before you just go installing this. You'll TRULY be glad you did. In it are the specific steps to get it working.

There are two versions of the download: One is the core files and the LS bundle. The other (which I prefer that you don't use unless you really have to) is the ENTIRE thing -- AveDesk 1.2, SysStats, along with the core files. This 'full' version is the one I used to develop the shell with (tho I cleaned it up), and is intended for those who don't want to mess up their *existing* AveDesk install. Since *this* is the version which Andreas and Judge may have a problem with (since I haven't secured Paul's permission to bundle 'Stats, and the permission I got from Andreas was for AveDesk 1.1..), I would REALLY prefer that it not be used unless you fall in the above category. I've done this as a courtesy for the rest of you who want to try it in a 'no-touch' fashion. Just remember that if either Paul or Andreas has a problem with the full version, I'm going to pull it. Nuff said.

Now then. Test it, use it, start making stuff for it. :) If all goes well, I'll dub it 'RTM' and it'll be an official release next week.

As always, the support area is here.. Post up if you have any problems.

Enjoy !

Would you mind doing a lil writeup explaining exactly what AveShell can do? Yeah, I realize it's a shell replacer/enhancer, but what is it capable of?

Thanks in advance,

Nirodha

#303368

it only works for 1024x768 or less? did i understand this right?

#303369

It works on everything -- problem is you'd have to move everything around.

I've got an idea using some of the more finer features of AveDesk to take care of this tho.

#303370

fine! I'm very excited...the screenshot looks very promising so far!

#303372

It's nice, and memory usage is low, but explorer is still required for the file browser (or thats how it seemed with me) so the process still needs to run in the background, which is a shame. Anyhow, good work, though 1024x768 is a little inconvenient, but i'm sure you are working on it already ;)

#303375

If you want a full replacement, I recommend ExploreXP. It's pretty good, has low overhead and is generally decent although it's not really customizeable.

Barring that, a good neXplorer and an Aero skin will work a treat also -- and since explorer isn't running, it runs a bit better than usual. :)

#303379

are there any mirrors? I can't get to this site.

#303401

@BetaguyGZT : any luck on fixing the main drive letter problem? My main drive isn't C: and therefore i cannot get the AveShell to work..?

#303503

Thx...it really can provide transparency for the visual function ?

#303603

Thank you, Ill test it for you next week

#303628

Thanks to everyone who has tried it so far. Other than a little glitch with the swapper (update can be found at the AeroShell Project Forums if it's not in the main post), things have worked beautifully and no serious problems have come up.

The 'drive letter thing' is being worked on. That, the help system and the installer (and a few minor updates here and there) will be the focus for Beta-2, which I plan to have available at the end of this week; with the official release happening the day Vista Beta-1 launches (Aug 3).

And yes, the .png transparency is indeed real -- you'd expect nothing less from software the quality of AveDesk and SysStats.

#303643

blah.. it doesn't like my computer :(

maybe because i have windows on the d drive :/

#303727

forgot to say it works on my winxp home computer. I didnt know what else to do other than the start button showing all the programs installed on the systm.

#306335

it's...Longhorn?

Here?

#306349

Oh, c'mon Duckie.

The screenshot shown there is Aero/Longhorn/Vista.

I'm pretty sure there's also an Aqua skin included.

Last time this/other issues got discussed, Aqua-Soft got shut down :P.

I was just wondering here how AveDesk could replace the regular desktop, i.e. with being able to rename the actual files that are located on the AveDesk desktop, and perform operations over the physical files and not shortcuts to them - is that what AveShell's mission is?

Also, it's prolly mentioned among bugs - but when i exit avedesk and load it again, all the docklet's name get reset to the executable file's names (i.e. "firefox.exe" instead of "Mozilla Firefox" I set before exiting). Wonder how to fix that.. Thanks!

#306846

If I can actually suceed in making SysStats configs, then there will be an Aqua skin... That's... if I can make the configs. :)

They keep getting corrupted. Grr.

#306985

New version of SysStats really helps with a lot of little issues that have cropped up.

The workaround for corrupted configs is to *save as...* BEFORE you close the configuration dialog, AND to work on one config at a time. I haven't had a corrupted one since, doing it that way. :)

Give me a shout on MSN Messenger (the NEW addy I'm using -- not the old one), and I'll help you in any way I can.
